Presentation transcript:

BUG newcastle university bicycle users group BUG works with estates and security services on campus to promote safe riding, safe parking and works for better facilities for cyclists on campus. At the same time, cycling infrastructure around Newcastle needs improving. Advocacy is important to the more active participants in the BUG. politics and desire cycling can be a good way of meeting people. It may be a topic to get a bit hot under the collar about. Big, small, female, male and whatever your politics - the BUG group at Newcastle University is non- partisan and friendly. Big, small, female, male, left-leaning, blue, red and shades between We encourage the participation of people from all walks and disciplines. The aim of the BUG is to promote and develop whatever is needed to support cycling. join us! the BUG is open to anyone who would like to join. Current members include staff, postgraduates, undergraduates of Newcastle University as well as other people who live and work around the University campus. Everyone is welcome. BUG membership is managed via a mailbase mailing list. The list is low traffic so please join up. get (on) a bike perhaps there are things that put people off: maybe some have not tried cycling before, don’t know where to go or don’t own a bike. That’s why the BUG has a buddy scheme, and why we support the cycle to work scheme. If you are nervous about cycling we will link you up with someone who will encourage and support you. If you can’t afford a bike there are other possibilities. University employees may be able to purchase a bicycle through the cycle to work scheme; through which you get significant savings on the cost price, and spread payments over a 12 month period get Stern ‘climate change fatigue’? Cycling is energising. “when I cycle to work I arrive bright-eyed. I am more productive and concentrate better” (DW, Research Associate) Cycling does not need to be unpleasant – quite the opposite! Join a discussion on the BUG BLOG for tips and about gear… or about global warming. be secure it is a sad fact that without good locks and secure facilities bicycles are prone to theft. Newcastle University is a particularly open setting and easy for thieves to find bicycles and/or components worth taking. who we are We are staff and students at Newcastle University (and beyond). We seek to increase the ease and use of cycling as a means of transport. Through our mailing list we encourage an interactive forum for cyclists at Newcastle University. Our achievements: covered cycling racks more toaster racks better shower facilities CCTV coverage Liaison with security and estates BUG buddy scheme eat cake: cycle fast ’energy in/energy out’ identifies a key problem many of us face. It is easy to eat more than we require, and often foods that do not support a long, healthy and active life. But you can eat (more) cake if you cycle fast… join the BUG and eat cake food should be a pleasure. The BUG website includes a food guide to Newcastle and surrounds. We welcome contributions to the produce and restaurant guide. join the BUG for a social ride to a nice pub! 60% of trips made in the UK are less than 5km Special thanks to the Public Health Research Program (IHS) for their support
