How does Public Policy Affect Work- Family Issues? Public policies – which can be viewed as important factors in the environments in which families and workplaces function - can act as either facilitators or constraints with regard to the options and the resources that can be accessed by working families and/or by their employers. (Systems theory, Person-in-environment perspective)

What are the purposes of work- family policy? to increase working families’ access to critical resources (e.g., tangible services and supports, monetary resources, and non-work time that is aligned with family needs without jeopardizing job security) to build the capacity of decision-makers in all three sectors (public, private for profit, and nonprofit) to respond to the priority needs of working families.

What are the key characteristics of work-family policies? Family policy Employment/labor policy Work-family policy

Executive Branch of Government Responsible for implementing legislation (ordinances at the municipal/county levels).

Legislative Branch of Government Considers bills and makes-decisions about enacting laws. The processes for considering bills reflect legislative committee structures.

Judicial Branch of Government Makes policy through its interpretation of existing laws as a result of cases brought to court.

Federal /State /Municipal Government Federal Government- No explicit family policy, but embedded in TANF, WIC, food stamps, etc. State Government- have the option to provide supplementary funds for family programs (such as health care for children), as well as to implement programs using state tax dollars Municipal Government- varies significantly from local government to local government
