And now for something completely different… informal collaboration Kat Hagedorn University of Michigan University of Michigan11/8/2005

Harvesting in the wild  Lots o’ harvesting  Over 500 OAI data providers  Been in contact with almost half of them at least once (if only a “thanks for your data”)  Simple metadata, big system = little time = ignore lots of metadata inconsistencies

Common problems reported  resumptionTokens broken  Service completely down  Timeout errors  Validation hoses my transform engine

Common lessons learned  Years ago, few believed me when I reported an issue…  …boy, has that changed!  …boy, has that changed!  (due in part to me learning how to communicate more effectively what the actual problem is)  OAI more valuable/valued now?

What’s become obvious…  Communication is imperative  Lucid explanation is a must  Tools are necessary  validation, e.g., UTF-8, XML  DP software that is consistent  Best practices are invaluable  for DP peace of mind  for SP hair loss prevention

Questions  Kat Hagedorn   University of Michigan Libraries  Digital Library Production Service   
