Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Atkinson Library Jackson Community College

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) is a resource with an extensive array of bibliographic data about children's books, video and audio recordings, and other child-focused media.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database CLCD presently contains more than 900,000 catalog records that have children's subject headings included. These records often come with annotations- brief summaries of the books.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database In addition, the database contains more than 130,000 critical reviews of thousands of children's books, ranging from the earliest baby board books to novels and nonfiction for young adults. An average of more than 1500 new reviews are added to the database monthly.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Begin your use of CLCD on the JCC Library home page. Use the Quick Link!

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Select the Research Databases link.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database CLCD is found in the Literature Research link.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Several literature- related databases are available here.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Access to the records within CLCD is provided via two separate information retrieval mechanisms: a Search page and a Browse page. The Search page allows you to perform full text searches of the bibliographic data and book reviews within the database. The Browse page provides you with the ability to create several types of browse lists that also can be used to access records in the database.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database To start a search from the Search page, enter words into the Full- Text Search Word(s) field and click the Search button. You may wish to type in one or more terms that are related to your research subject.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database A single term, if it is not too common, frequently will produce good search results. However, a search using a common term such as "dogs" will return a large number of records.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database To narrow such a search, include another term related to the specific concept you are interested in (such as “work").

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database A screen of results will display. Check the size of your list of results. Too many? Not enough?

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Titles are sorted in relevancy ranked order. A green dot means that one or more reviews are present. An orange dot means that curriculum tools are available.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database Your search term/s will be highlighted. Click on any title to examine a record. Click here

Using Your Results Each record gives the author, title and publication information, and may include at least one review.

Using Your Results At the bottom of the screen are options for examining more results, or for starting a new search.

Using Your Results Some records include information on reading level, or awards won by the book...

Using Your Results... or clickable subject links that will start a new search.

Using Your Results Your list of results also has several options.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database To start a search from the Browse page, enter a word into the Browse Word(s) field, select the Browse category, and click the Browse button.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database A screen of results will display. Notice that your term is listed with other terms near to it alphabetically. Check one or more subjects. Then click on SELECT.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database …check one or more subjects. Then click on SELECT.

Using the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database A list of results will display. You can work with them as you did for a Search page search.

Using Your Results One of the options for using your results is to make a customized list.

Using Your Results Here is a sample search for information on Newbery Award- winning books.

Using Your Results Let’s create a list of those books by author’s name. Click on Sort to begin this list.

Using Your Results When the Sort options are displayed, select Author, select Ascending, and then click Sort.

Using Your Results You now have the list displayed with the authors’ names in alphabetical order.

Using Your Results Let’s select only those titles that have curriculum- related materials included. Check the box of any item with an orange dot.

Using Your Results When you have selected the records you need, click on Display Saved Items.

Using Your Results The list of saved items is displayed. You can Sort this list. You can also make a bibliography using Custom Reports.

Using Your Results Let’s create a bibliography. Click on Custom Reports and follow the instructions.

Using Your Results Format your bibliography with authors’ names first, then title, publisher, and date.

Using Your Results Your bibliography will display. Follow the directions for printing, saving, or starting a new search.
