P. Brian Fisher CofC: POLS 405 Spring 2011

Lomborg, Cool It! Polar bear story tells us:  1. we hear vastly emotional and exaggerated claims about climate change (not supported by data)  2. Only hear about the troubled species, and some will actually do better  3. Our concern forces us to focus on the wrong solutions.

Lomborg’s main arguments  1. Global warming is real and human induced  2. Statements about the strong, ominous and immediate consequences of global warming are often exaggerated.  3. We need simpler, smarter, and more efficient solutions rather than excessive well intentioned efforts  E.g. large and expensive CO2 cuts made now will only have a marginal and insignificant impact into the future.  4. Many other issues are much more important than global warming  Hunger, poverty and disease.  5. We can help more people by addressing these things at a lower cost and higher success than by pursuing drastic climate policies that cost trillions of dollars.
