Voting Machines Failing the World *Voting machines around the world are failing in Colorado as well as 34 other states. *This could be crucial in the upcoming election because the majority of these states are swing states. *There are many easy fixable issues occurring along with glitches in the poll book. *All these problems can be easy fixable, but states are lacking the proper people to fix these as well as the safe guards to protect the machines. VOTE

*Paper Ballots came out in 1856 in the Australian state Victoria. New York was the first American state to adopt this in This is the system where there is an official ballot with all the candidates names printed on it. Once the ballot is sealed it is placed in the correct box, as to which candidate they are voting for, a mark is placed on the outside of that box. VOTE History of the Voting System

*Mechanical Lever voting came out in New York in This type of system is where an official ballot or candidates name is placed on a certain lever which is arranged in a rectangular levers in the front of the machine. The lever is places in a horizontal position when a vote for that candidate has not been placed. This voting system took place during the 1996 presidential election. VOTE History of the Voting System

*Punch cards came out in California in This system was also used in the 1996 presidential election. This system is where the voter as a small sized official ballot where the voter punches a hole in the proper spot for their candidate. Once that has occurred the voter can then place the ballot in a box to be electronically counted later or they can place their card through the computerized machine at that moment to be recorded. VOTE History of the Voting System

*Mark sense Optical scanning is also used during the 1996 presidential election. This system of voting is where there is a preprinted official ballot with an open oval or rectangular shape that is blank. Then the voter fills in this shape to the candidate of their choice and then the marked ballot is feed through a computer tabulating device and is counted. The computer uses the “dark mark logic” where the computer takes the darkest mark on the ballot and calculates that as the vote. VOTE History of the Voting System

*The direct recording electronic or the DRE is the most recent voting system used. This system does not use a ballot, but the choices for the election are viewable on the front of the machine for the voter. The voter then uses the touch screen to select their choices and there is also an offered keyboard for any write-in votes. The votes are then kept electronically in a storage of via memory cartridge or smart card. VOTE History of the Voting System

Voting Machines Failing the World Issues -Errors in the electronic machines counting abilities. -Glitches in the smart cards memory -The storage device (smart card) losing data -Touch screen failing to choose the correct candidate for the voter -Updates that are needed for the machine no one has intelligence to update machine VOTE

Voting Machines Failing the World “ Our analysis shows that this voting system is far below even the most minimal security standards applicable in other contexts,” said the researchers in a paper published Wednesday on the Internet, concluding that “ as a society, we must carefully consider the risks inherent in electronic voting, as it places our very democracy at risk.” VOTE

Voting Machines Failing the World "We are going to analyze the report and make intelligent decisions," Avi Rubin a computer scientist specialist said. "We have been using the systems now for a year and a half. We've had great success in dealing with them." VOTE

Voting Machines Failing the World "If there is a failure or a compromise of one unit, we know who voted on that unit," David Heller manager of Maryland voting system said. "We don't know how they voted, but we know who voted." VOTE

Voting Machines Failing the World Discussion Questions: What other methods should be used besides electronic voting? Is it worth the time to go back in time in returning to the paper ballots? VOTE
