EGR 105 Foundations of Engineering I Fall 2007 – week 4 Excel part 2

EGR105 – Week 4 topics “How to succeed” Group exercise Graphing with Excel Assignment # 4

How to succeed – 2 basic parts 1.Persistence and hard work 2.Setting challenging, yet achievable goals –Both short and long terms –Possible to live without, but you accomplish much more with them

Goal setting exercise On a sheet of paper: 2 minutes – list 3 major lifetime goals 2 minutes – list 3 goals for the next year 2 minutes – list things you have done in the past week that relate to these lists

Goal setting process Should not be a hassle Goals should be specific and measurable Goal integrity –High: sincere; failure not planned on and is quickly corrected –Low: superficial; failure is expected and signals the end of the goal

Goals should have a timetable Goals should be written down Share them with others Should be achievable, but require effort Review and revise regularly –But, don’t obsess on them

EGR105 – Week 4 topics “How to succeed” Group exercise Graphing with Excel Assignment # 4

Group exercise 3-5 students per group Play the “name game” first names and favorite food Consider the attributes shown on the overhead – identify and rank your top 5

Group exercise discussion Three groups surveyed several years ago: –Students –Faculty –Employers

The top 5 choices by group: RankStudentsFacultyIndustry Problem solving Comm. skills Math/science prof Ethics Technical skills Computer literacy Open mind Continue learning

EGR105 – Week 4 topics “How to succeed” Group exercise Graphing with Excel Assignment # 4

Excel techniques Plotting and Excel’s terminology: –“Chart” (use XY scatter, not line!!) –“Category” is the independent variable, horizontal axis, abscissa –“Value” is the dependent variable, vertical axis, ordinate Live demo in a few minutes
