What’s That? : A Location Based Service Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Minnesota Presented by: Don Eagan Chintan Patel

Outline Motivation Problem Statement Proposed Solution Next Steps Question(s)

Motivation Today’s powerful and feature-rich mobile devices have fueled the emergence of a new class of applications that are impractical for desktops Features such as GPS, compass, accelerometer Emergence of Location Based Services (LBS) Applications under utilizing available hardware Many LBS applications ignoring directional dimension User friendly queries tailored for the pedestrian “What’s that?” vs. “What’s around location XYZ?”

Motivation World Surfer combines GPS and compass to identify places of interest from a given database Layar combines GPS, camera, and compass to identify your surroundings

Problem Statement Input Location and directional information provided by a mobile device Output An easy to use tool to identify entities in unfamiliar settings User provided with relevant data. identification, reviews, menu, hours, etc. Assumptions / Constraints Availability – The application must execute on commercially released operating system(s) and hardware. Affordability Data set limited to a small number of rectangular objects Pitch of mobile device not taken into account

Proposed Solution Application built on Android platform Available SDK with the necessary tools and APIs to develop Java based applications Consumption of existing APIs Synthetic map data to reduce prototype time Application partitioned into layers

Next Steps Definition of application layers and Interfaces Development Implementation and integration of application layers Data generation Unit testing Testing Simulations Stub generation Hardware Device selection Deployment of application to perform accuracy checks
