Science Operations Update NGAO - Meeting 11 D. Le Mignant, E. McGrath & C. Max W. M. Keck Observatory 11/05/2007

Talking Points Update to the picture Science cases update The path to release 2 of SCRD SRD update version 1.15 available for comments Science Ops WSPS The on-going: Pre-observing interfaces: The guide star tool The equivocal Discussion / comments

Observatory Rqts Science Operations Science Requirements Observing Scenarios Observing Models TS: KAON 476 Observing Efficiency Budget System Design Approach System Engineering Science Operations Performance budget Trade Studies Rationales for Functional and Performance Requirements 3.4: Science Ops Functional Rqts Main Drivers & Risk Areas SRD v1.15 SCRD v. 2 progress status WSPSs Pre-observing interfaces Observing Timeline

Priorities from last meeting (09/17) 1.SCRD –Include/retrofit observing scenarios –“All-in” science simulations for SCRD –E.g., Requirements for PSF reconstruction 2.SRD from the operations perspective –Science ops requirements Based on ?? –Observatory overall requirements Based on ?? 3.Observing efficiency performance budget –See Science Ops page –NGS backup science TS? 4.FRD for science operations –WBS Science operations plan –WBS 3.4 –WBS 3.2

Science Cases Update Claire, Liz and David produced a completion status table for the science cases (Key science drivers and science drivers): –Linked hereLinked here Rationale: –Manage the simulations and edits for each science case –Case / case -> small team for each science case –Expected outcome: release 2 of SCRD For each science case –Status of SCRD & SRD tables and text –Status of observing scenarios –Status of simulation (AO and science) and new requirements –Need to identify SC Volunteers (we don’t pay them!) What’s next: –Find and work with the volunteers case by case. (twice a month meetings, etc) –Time/effort allocation? –Process already started for Asteroids (KSD #1)

SRD v1.15 Included changes up to 1.14 Changes to section 6.1 and 6.2, then posted on the NGAO TWiki pages: linked herelinked here Included science operations in section 6.1.4, –Requirement summary tables Updated section 6.2 Observatory Requirements –Added (moved) telescope and dome environment requirements –Added Observatory Operational requirements Any volunteer to review the changes and iterate?

On-going WSPS Science operations: the on-going –WBS : Pre-observing interfacesPre-observing interfaces AO Guide Star Interfaces Science Observations Simulation Tools Soon to start: –WBS : Observing interfaces Acquisition Observing Sequences Instrument, AO & Telescope Observer Interfaces Science Data Quality Monitoring TBD: FRD for science operations –WBS

AO Guide Star Interfaces

Science Observations Simulation tools Requirements on Simulation Tools have to be defined and include similar challenges than for PSF reconstruction: –How to measure the quality of simulations SR, EE, FWHM of peak and halo PSF radial fit Speckle intensity and distribution Deconvolution residuals ? –What is the experience of GPI and others Coordination of the effort with the IWG –How much can anticipate an instrument interface design? –Requirements?

Discussion / Comments Priority list –More effort on SCRD/SRD than FRD for operations –Pre-observing Interfaces on-going –Observing timeline / observing scenarios –Operations Architecture.. (not before December) Iterations between science requirements and system design. –Our plan includes iterations between the SCRD and the AO system design. –Simultaneously with completing SCRD v2.0, we need to be working with Rich to refine his spreadsheet calculations of the relevant wavefront errors; with Chris and scientists to simulate the relevant AO performance for analysis by the scientists; then use simulations to translate science requirements to AO system requirements. We hadn't expected SCRD v. 2.0 to take as long as it has taken. –Requirements tables from SRD were a very useful approach, and have clarified what are the key questions that need further work. –Some of these have been addressed, others are in progress –Hard to get senior scientists to do substantive work; younger generation has been more useful. –SCRD v. 2.0 completion status will be posted and updated. Any questions?
