 ESA’s education activities are part of the Agency’s effort to contribute to the scientific and technical education of young Europeans  Europe and ESA need young brains…  An important element of these activities, in the framework of the ISS and Exploration programme, is the establishment of a network with first-class Academic institutions - and their students - as those represented in e.g. the SpaceMaster Programme The Academic Network for Space Exploration (1) As of today 3 consortia of 16 universities covering 10 European countries: SpaceMaster Life in Space EuMAS Kiruna, 15 th May

The academic network for Space Exploration (2) SpaceMaster Collaborating universities from Czech, Finland, France, Germany, Sweden, UK Space science and technology 45 – 60 students each year Full time two-years master course Supported by the EC Erasmus Mundus Programme Grants for European students not funded by the EC Stages (4 months) at ESTEC Lectures presented by ESA staff members on the subject of human spaceflight and exploration Courses and lectures on different locations EuMAS Collaborating universities from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK Aerospace engineering (aeronautical engineering / space technology) 25 – 50 students each year Kiruna, 15 th May

The Academic Network for Space Exploration (3) Life in Space  Consortium consists of universities from France (coordinating university), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, UK  Two-weeks exobiology course in Banyuls-sur-mer, France  Supported by the EC Erasmus Programme  50 students each year  Support for European students  Provision for equipment during the course (computers, study material)  E-learning session with an ESA astronaut  Lectures presented by ESA staff members on the subject of human spaceflight and space exploration/exobiology Kiruna, 15 th May

PhD Opportunities The Networking/Partnering Initiative (NPI)  The Technical Directorate of ESA (D/TEC) supports up to 30 PhD research projects per year, from which up to 2 PhD projects relevant to ESA’s Space Exploration Programme will be sponsored by the Human Spaceflight Directorate  The PhD proposal selection will be twice a year  Support offered by the NPI: –Co-funding up to 50% or max 15 k€ per year per PhD –Access to ESTEC laboratories –Technical support from ESA experts –Ability to search within ESA for potential partners for further cooperation  One-to-one contract between D/TEC and the academic institution per PhD  Kiruna, 15 th May

ESA offers several training opportunities for young nationals from its Member and Cooperating States*  Post Doctoral Research Fellowships: 20 – 30 placements per year (for 1 or 2 years) in one of ESA’s establishments, PhD required  Young Graduate Traineeship: 1 year, placement in one of ESA’s establishments, selection is annually in November/December, Master required  End of Studies Trainee Periods: 6 months internships at one of the ESA establishments or * Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
