Learning Design and QTI SLeD workshop Patrick Mc Andrew, Diane Evans, Alex Little, Wim van der Vegt, & Rob Nadolski (OU-UK, OU-NL) UNFOLD workshop GlasgowOctober 13, 2005

Why using LD+QTI together? - Learning and assessment (almost always) go together (‘constructive allignment’, ‘integrated assessment’) - IMS Learning Design is used to model units of learning - a unit of learning (UoL) is any delimited piece of education or training, such as a course, a module, a lesson, etc - more than just a collection of ordered resources to learn - activitities, assessments, services and support facilities provided by teachers, trainers and other staff members - Model who does what, when, with whom and using which learning objects and services (learning flow) - QTI is used to model assessments/tests

How using LD+QTI together? - If learning flow depends on test results  strong integration between LD+QTI (property exchange mechanism: declare, set/get) (option 1) - If learning flow does NOT depend on test-results  weak integration between LD+QTI (just in CP, specific resource types files/links) (option 2) - Learning flow and tests both modelled in LD (so refrain from QTI) only if option (1) does not work well, or if there needs to be an integrated player (option 3) (e.g. Geo-Quizes, Quo-Builders) - Option 1 is preferable above option 3 ((a) interoperability, (b) reusability existing QTI (c) QTI offers more for tests (e.g. item banking) than IMS LD) (option 1 unavailable when Geo-Quizes & Quo-Builders were developed!!)

Quo-Builder 2(1) (option 3) Demo in SLeD(teacher, construction Quo)

Quo-Builder 2(2) (option 3) Demo in SLeD(student, answering Quo)

Quo-Builder 2(3) (option 3) Demo in SLeD(teacher, monitoring Quo)

Aims Quo-Builder 2 -Demonstrating IMS LD features - multiple roles (teacher, student) - monitor service (below: same as for Geo-Quizes & explained by Daniel in workshop ‘Beyond level A) - show and hide layers with different content - to set up and manage properties to handle the answers inside the manifest.xml file (define) - to use ‘view-property’ and ‘set-property’ in external XHTML files together with information layers - to store values depending on choices and perform calculations with such values

How to arrive at Option 1: where is P- intake-score set? - The actual test would be QTI content - A LD-aware engine uses a QTI-engine (SLeD/Coppercore, APIS) - Need QTI and LD to ‘share’ P-intake-score –Declared by both –Set by QTI engine –Read by LD engine

Example conditions (LD-part) Thanks to Colin Tattersall

QTI intake test (QTI-part) Thanks to Colin Tattersall

Where goes the QTI into the UoL? - Either in the environment/learning object as a separate schema. Tests can be connected to learning-activities (examples: Owen ONeill, Colin Tattersall) (option 1) - Or in IMS Content Package (specific resource types) as separate files/links (option 2) (option 1) Demo in SLeD of an example Arthropod (provided by Owen ONeill, based on QTI-content University of Cambridge)

Arthropod QTI-Quiz(1) (option 1) Demo in SLeD(learner, at quiz-start)

Arthropod QTI-Quiz(2) (option 1) Demo in SLeD(learner, quiz completed succesfully)
