Faculty & Course Evaluation: was it worth all the effort ? Trevor Gibbs

At the end of the curriculum, are we sure that we eventually produced the right product ? = ASSESSMENT

“ The curriculum is a meaningful & sophisticated blend of educational strategies, course content, learning outcomes, educational experiences, assessment, the educational environment ( faculty & resources); that accommodates the right students, their individuals learning styles, personal timetable and programme of work ”

At the end of the curriculum, are we sure that we produced the right product ? = ASSESSMENT At the end of the curriculum, are we sure that we have the right curriculum = EVALUATION

“ Evaluation is the systematic and meaningful enquiry to determine the value of programmes / curricula, policies, projects, people, communities & organisations in a quest for improvement ” “ The so what factor ”

It is therefore: an important component of any educational activity an important component of any educational activity a purposeful, not a feel good, factor a purposeful, not a feel good, factor dynamic, active not passive; potential to create change dynamic, active not passive; potential to create change cyclical and responsive, potential to drive change cyclical and responsive, potential to drive change about giving feedback and direction for the future about giving feedback and direction for the future

EVALUATION v ASSESSMENT Value Worth Effects Judgements Directions Feedback Outcomes Activities Measurements Individuals Scores Competencies Outcomes “ Examinations ”

content & process rating scales & free text immediate potential to offer shape to a course “ feel good factor ” “ So, how do you think that went ? ”

“So, lets measure everything and hope we find something positive” Before and after effects High scores = something learned = therefore good course Assumptive, or by-proxy measure

KIRKPATRICK’S MODEL OF EVALUATION ( Four measures, four levels of evaluation) 1 & 2 plus 3:BEHAVIOUR- has it changed the participants, can they / will they apply the new knowledge ? “ How do you think this course will affect your future activities” 4:RESULTS - what are / what have been the immediate & long term effects upon the participant / system ?

“ At the end of the day, we know what we wanted to achieve; have we been successful. If not, why not and can we change it ?”
