OCW SE: Project Overview March 29, 2006 OpenCourseWare Secondary Education

OCW SE: Project Overview 1 I.Description II.Goals III.Proposed Scope IV.Project Timeline V.Budget and Funding VI.Questions for Discussion 1OCW SE: Project Overview

2 What is OCW SE? › OpenCourseWare SE is a project to apply the success of OpenCourseWare to mathematics, science and engineering resources for 7-12 grade students and educators. › Resources would be drawn from MIT faculty and educators across the United States and published openly by MIT OpenCourseWare for use by educators and learners around the world. › At this point although the general framework of OCW SE is defined (e.g., open source publishing), there are many issues to be resolved about the overall architecture of the project (e.g., "course" content, marketing and outreach, dissemination, relationship to other efforts at MIT and nationally).

OCW SE: Project Overview 3 Goals › Provide free, open access to high quality educational resources in mathematics, science, and engineering for grade 7-12 educators and students › Inspire young scientists and engineers › Improve the quality of secondary education in the United States using a scalable, proven, and sustainable model

OCW SE: Project Overview 4 › “best of” math, science and engineering secondary education “courses” (or units of instruction for courses)  Interactive learning communities  Video of “best of” high school educators  Innovative multimedia applications › Teachers in residence program with potential funding for teacher sabbaticals › Certificate programs in areas of science, math, and engineering › Annual recognition event at MIT bringing together top secondary education instructors and MIT faculty Proposed Scope

OCW SE: Project Overview 5 Project Timeline

OCW SE: Project Overview 6 Budget and Funding › Phase 1: Discovery and Design ($100K)  School of Engineering ($50K) and MIT OCW ($50K). OCW’s funding was provided using a $50K award from The Tech Museum of Innovation. › Phase 2: Pilot (~$ K)  Publication of existing materials from one high quality high school level course in a science discipline, which will be structured using the OCW course format  Publication of existing materials for one high quality high school level course in mathematics, which will be structured using the OCW course format  Development of a new high school level project based, one semester, engineering course › Phases 3: Expansion (~$40 - $100M?)  Level of corporate funding not yet decided. $1M/year, $500K/year for five years?  Level of input/branding determined by level of giving?  Individuals, Foundations, Government?

OCW SE: Project Overview 7 Questions for Discussion › Should OCW SE be targeted for improving education for STEM students (and for attracting more students to STEM) or should be targeted for improving technical education more broadly? › Should OCW SE contain content for courses or units of instruction (or something else)? › Should the OCW SE project focus on corporate and foundation partners, or should we also try to engage federal and state governments? › Should we engage other universities (community colleges, etc) and if so how might we choose who to engage? › Who is the primary audience for OCW SE? › What are the challenges and risks associated with implementing OCW SE?
