Undergraduate Exploration of Nano-Science Michigan Technological University NSF-NUE Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education

Goals for Workshop 1 Gain some perspective & vision of different aspects of nanoscale science & technology and societal implications See where we can contribute to the educational plan of the proposal Gain perspective on timeline of activities Start developing collaborations & contacts Start developing course materials!

RFP Guidelines 1 year $100,000 limit Interdisciplinary Integrate nanoscale science and technology into curricula Include societal implications of nanoscale science and technology

RFP Guidelines (cont) Develop and disseminate new modules for existing STEM courses Incorporate undergraduate research opportunities in nanoscale science and engineering Focus on reaching first and second year students

MTU NUE Approach Multi-faceted approach that will introduce students to basic science of nanotechnology, its applications, and possible societal implications. “The overall idea, a sort of 'saturation' approach to including nano-science in all levels of engineering and non-engineering courses, is an admirable one”

MTU Approach Lots of participants in many disciplines Social SciencesElectrical & Computer Eng. PhysicsMaterials Science & Eng. Mechanical Eng.Engineering Fundamentals ChemistryCivil Engineering Computer Science Center for Teaching, Learning & Faculty Development

MTU Approach Capitalize on existing infrastructure, research, curricula 1)Modules: 1 st & 2 nd year Chemistry & Physics 2)Modules, Problems, Explorations for Engineering Fundamentals 3)Nano-themed “Perspectives on Inquiry” sections (Fall: Caneba, Yap) 4)New 1 credit elective course: “Fundamentals of Nanoscale Science and Engineering” (team taught in Spring)

MTU Approach 5)Nanotechnology Lecture Series (1 Fall; 4 Spring) 5)Modules for 2 nd -year engineering courses Introduction to Materials Science & Eng. Integrated Design and Manufacturing 6)Enterprise Program 7)Existing Social Science course: “Science, Technology and Society” 5)Undergraduate research experiences

MTU Approach 5)Independent Study courses 6)Aristotle University of Thessaloniki 7)Summer Youth Programs Reaching underrepresented groups 5)Web Site 6)Meetings & publications 7)Assessment
