SecondLife – fad or useful? Brief overview of SL Outline some generic uses of SL + demo these Discipline specific future use in SAD Future plans for SL at University

SecondLife – fad or useful? SL is a virtual world run by a commercial company It has people, places and interactions (chat or voice) It is free to join but buildings, clothes, having a pet buffalo etc cost! To create things or experiences in SL needs a programmer SL needs a high-spec graphics card Many UK Universities have, or are planning, a presence

SecondLife – fad or useful? Generic Uses of SL Repository for content, images + vodcasts / podcasts Three-D models Simulations – role plays, business simulations, To model real life - virtual experiencesvirtual experiences

CELT Project: Immersed in Learning (Discipline Specific - Digital Media) An Evaluation of 3-D Virtual Immersive Worlds as a Learning and Teaching Tool in the UG Programme in Digital Media What are the benefits of integrating 3D immersive learning with face-to-face learning for DM students who can be considered to be ‘digital natives’? Exploring the potentials for: Empowerment, Collaboration and Skill Building Potential to create animations (Machinima), develop building and programming skills (SL Scripting Language), explore Role Play, use as a Games Engine, etc

Level 2 UG Module: Character and Environment Possibilities to expand the role play and imagining skills of the module: Sample Lecture: Beauty, Character and Caricature. Where does beauty reside? Angrybeth Shortbread with her students Angrybeth uses Second Life as an extra curricular activity alongside the HND Design for Multimedia course at Leeds College of Art and Design

Meeting at the DDM Collective Island, 2nd April 2007 Meeting the Leeds students on their Island. The man with the white hair is the Steven Bohm, E-Learning Co-ordinator for King’s College, London

Varia Allen’s views ( sent to me, 1st May 2007) I found it to be a relaxing way of doing a seminar, not having the frights to speak out in front of everyone if you're shy, and it was fun to see the in-game project of the Leeds multimedia design students, which was quite social and friendly to meet and chat with them. It's a captivating experience, I cant express how much of a good impact there is to it, or explain how addictive it is, you have to explore it yourself to see.

Learning Technology Research Cluster Crispin Dale, Cluster Leader Development Money to: Set up and buy an Island (plus rental fees for 1 year) for the use of Digital School of Art and Design and the School of Performing Arts To employ Luna Bliss - Virtual Architect and Landscape Designer to develop the Island terrain SecondLife – fad or useful?

U21 Global Campus - Singapore Luna Bliss has developed this island for a conglomorate of Online Universities in Singapore.
