The New Apollo Energy Act -Introduced by Jay Inslee (D-WA) 14 cosponsors originally; currently 24 - Emphasizes similar challenge to America as President Kennedy’s Apollo Project - Very progressive legislation

Summary -Clean energy -Oil savings -Fuel efficiency -Global warming and greenhouse gas emissions -Clean energy jobs -Renewable portfolio -Energy transmission -Does not decrease the deficit

Brief History -Democratic Caucus (March, 2003) -Introduced as alternative to Energy Policy Act of 2003 to the Committee on Rules (April, 2003) -published an article in the Seattle Times arguing against Bush’s energy proposal (January, 2004) -Introduced as alternative to the Republican sponsored Energy Bill of 2005 (April, 2005) -published an article in Grist Magazine highlighting the differences between Energy Bill of 2005 and New Apollo (May, 2005) -Introduced the final “New Apollo Energy Act” to Congress, has been referred to various committees since this date (June 9, 2005)

The Apollo Alliance est Labor unions -Environmental organizations -Economic, social justice, business, and faith-based partners -State and local partners -Various individuals and foundations -$300 billion federal and state investment over ten years by implementing ten broad approaches - will create at least three million jobs, a stronger economy, a healthier, safer environment and eradicate dependence on Middle East oil

The Apollo Alliance local approach: With the Apollo Alliance’s ideas, Ohio will be able to : “lead the way in supplying the entire nation with components for wind turbines and other renewable infrastructure while also reducing pollution, increasing jobs and reducing dependence on foreign oil… the smartest states are endorsing and benefiting from this kind of big idea.” Amy Hanauer (2005), the executive director of Policy Matters Ohio Ohio has seen lost jobs, fallen wages, a lack of educational opportunities for young people, and high poverty rates Through successful local and state projects, the Apollo Alliance seeks to build national support and eventually pass legislation though Congress
