Presentation transcript:

CIS 423 – Spring 2005 Focus on online delivery of a software product: Running your own software product site. Doing tech support. Keeping your customers up to date. Focus on Practice: Version control and testing tools. Various databases for supporting your customers. Good programming practice.

What We Won’t Do  Will not focus on web-design, sorry.  Will not focus on product development: I will give you the software product.  Will not focus on money-exchange. You can worry about that when you market your own product (Or you can give it away.)

Course Logistics  You will break in to 3-person teams.  Team 1 will use LAMP, team 2 will use MS.  For first two weeks, both teams will have the same assignment, getting to know cvs and Ant.  Then will start on actual project.

Actual Project I’d like to try to meet the following milestones: 1.Build a customer DB that tracks customer info, including information about their environment, problems reported, current version, etc. 2.Build a tech-support DB that includes problem- tracking, known solutions. 3.Develop an auto-update feature that will provide new versions to customers.

Grading  I will give some smaller assignments during the quarter.  Major portion of your grade will be based on your project.  I will recruit some volunteer customers to use your site.  Their experience will be a big part of your final grade.

Textbooks  I did not order any books specifically.  Once you get into your project, you might want to browse Borders or B&N in town for useful books.  I have some you can borrow, as well.
