The Focus… -Mao, Andy Warhol -Acrylic and silkscreen on canvas -Art Institute of Chicago

Key Ideas Framing the Lesson -mirrors iconic imagery and size of Mao communist propaganda in China -Red rouge and blue eye shadow on Mao can be interpreted as graffiti -connections between Communist propaganda and American capitalist advertisements -Commercial pop art, mass production

What the Students Will Learn… -perform a close read of Andy Warhol’s Mao with both a formal and contextual analysis -analyze the use of Communist propaganda and capitalist advertising evident in Mao as a form of social commentary -create their own social commentary on American mass produced culture by using Andy Warhol’s techniques
