Twenty years ago, in many countries, people could choose their livelihood, they couldn’t usually choose to change from one profession to another. In 1994, 6 millions Americans quit their job to take a different post. Even in Japan, where people traditionally had a very secure job for life, there is now no promise of a lifetime job with the same company.

Globalization is causing many changes in the way people work today In the workplace today, there are dramatic changes in areas such as job security, the need for flexibility, the use of technology, and the importance of passion for one’s work.

3.3. Discuss with your friend the following questions: (p.70) What is the unemployment rate? Is it difficult for people to find jobs? Do most people have job security, or is there a lot of job hopping? Is it possible for people to change professions? How is the employment situation different from what it was twenty years ago? Is telecommuting common? If so, in what profession? Do people talk about workaholism? If so, do they consider it a problem? How as technology changed they way in which people live and work?

PART THREE More than 4 millions people last November joined an entrance test to apply 200 thousands positions as Government officer throughout Indonesia. There were thousands of job seekers attending the job expo to find hundred jobs available. It obviously indicates that the supply and the demand is not balanced.
