Health and Safety Manual Section G4 Portable Gas Safety

In response to the proliferation of LPG-fuelled patio heaters, principally for use in JCR-managed areas – such as College beer gardens. G4 includes all types of appliance fuelled by LPG and not connected to a mains gas supply, with the exceptions of those using non-refillable gas containers.

Standards  Use in accordance with LPG guidance  Competency rules as for mains gas  No use indoors  Register to be maintained

Risk Controls  Assemble, position and operate in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions  Test before use to ensure gas-tight and operating correctly  Positioned in areas shielded from wind  Secured to prevent them from falling over  Secure access panels to prevent unauthorised contact with the controls  Have any gaps in the casing – e.g. at the top of the cylinder housing – fitted with metal mesh or similar to prevent their use as litter bins.
