3 An Introduction to the Course… Goals: An appreciation of the need for empirical research in CS Knowledge of empirical research methods Statistical tools Topics include: The process of science (hypothesizing, experimenting, hypothesizing,... ) Experiment design Descriptive statistics Inferential statistics – hypothesis testing

4 Procedures Lectures about selected topics Take notes, not everything will be on slides! Verbal, board – will be in exam! 6 Academic Honesty A scientist has to be honest. Do not cheat. Group discussions are OK But after discussion, each writes her/his own answer. Be honest, and you will not get into trouble
