I. de la Calle Astronomy Science Operations Division Science Operations Department Background Working Group Meeting, Mallorca – 30/03/2009 XMM-Newton ESAC 1 Filter Wheel Closed Data How many EPIC CLOSED observations are needed ? Approach up to now (RCP): 12 x 10 ksec observations CLOSED FF (1/month) To be taken during the ‘good’time of the orbit New approach: 2 x 10 ksec observations (1/semester) Should there be evidence of response inhomogeneities, this can be increased via NRCOs or by changing the RCP Additionally, during some slews, all the MOS cameras can be set to CLOSED FF

I. de la Calle Astronomy Science Operations Division Science Operations Department Background Working Group Meeting, Mallorca – 30/03/2009 XMM-Newton ESAC 2 Implementation of MOS Slew CLOSED Data: Operations There are no operational issues and it can be easily implemented The Slew mode can be specified in the R&C File Implementation Two R&C Files are prepared R&C1: All MOS FF CAL-CLOSED Slews (Default) ; PN used for Slew Survey R&C2: All MOS FF CLOSED Slews ; PN used for Slew Survey All Slews in any given revolution will be done according to either R&C1 or R&C2 The selection of a given R&C file is done by hand by the mission planner at the time the revolution is scheduled The selection of R&C1 or R&C2 is manual (best-effort-basis) The re-schedule of a revolution because of a trigger or ToO observation could change the initially selected R&C File (picking the wrong file) Considerations Slews are kept to a minimum, i.e., the average Slew duration is around 45 min (7.5 ksec at best) The duration of the Slews will not be considered by the mission planner when using R&C2

I. de la Calle Astronomy Science Operations Division Science Operations Department Background Working Group Meeting, Mallorca – 30/03/2009 XMM-Newton ESAC 3 Discussion : MOS : Do CLOSED in Slews and/or dedicated observations ? MOS : How often, i.e, how many revolutions should MOS be set to CLOSED during Slews ? MOS : Does using MOS in CLOSED every so often have any impact in the MOS CAL-CLOSED Slews ? PN : is the approach of 2x10 ksec ok ?
