Jan Brett and Her Books By Mrs. Gruber’s Kindergarten Class Our Lady of Peace Columbus, Ohio, USA

Jan Brett is an American children’s book author who has written and illustrated more then twenty-five books for children. Her stories are wonderful and her illustrations are outstanding! Our class has been reading her books and studying the illustrations. We made our own illustrations of some of her characters.

Jan Brett often travels to foreign countries. She lives in the country for long periods of time while she studies the history of the country, its climate, its traditions, and its folklore. Jan Brett has written books that take place in Norway, China, Canada and Botswana. Her books give the readers an authentic look at each country!

The Umbrella takes place in the Monteverdi Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Jan Brett visited the cloud forest!

One of our favorite books is called Daisy Comes Home. Daisy Comes Home is set in China! It is the story of a young girl and her chickens. The girl’s name is Mei Mei and she lives near the Li River. The book tells the story of the sad day when Mei Mei’s chicken, Daisy, gets lost and all of Daisy’s experiences that day!

Jan Brett’s latest book is called The Three Snow Bears. The bears are polar bears! Jan Brett and her husband, Joe, traveled to northern Canada to become familiar with the area. She rode on a dog sled, saw an igloo, fell in love with the native Arctic clothing, and were welcomed by the Inuit people.
