Why You Need A Learning Strategy By Joseph Bernard Mohan

TEACHING – What ??? Teaching is ‘causing’ Causing people to LEARN

Becoming a Self-Directed Adult Learner YOUR GOAL YOUR GOAL Becoming a Self-Directed Adult Learner

Self-Directed Adult Learner – What ??? Able to plan, implement, evaluate your own learning with or without direction of others

Self-Directed Adult Learner – What ??? Requires shift in focus from tutor “providing” learning “to facilitating” learning

Food for Thought The purpose of study is to gain knowledge, not earn marks. If you have knowledge, you will earn marks; but the reverse does not necessarily apply If you understand, then it’s easy to remember, but the reverse does not apply It is important to take down what you do not understand in the lecture than to take down what you do understand. You can earn a lot of marks by choosing an easy course, but not necessarily gain a lot of knowledge at the same time. Source: Jackson Kong, BST, City University of Hong Kong

Self-directed Adult Learner – How ??? Discard your old identity: Being passive & waiting to be filled & directed by the teacher This approach has no value in the new world of high-tech & non-traditional mode of learning That MAGICAL teacher will never appear on the scene

Taking control of your learning – Suggestions ! Change your learner self-concept Research shows that as an adult learner you have a “deep psychological need to be generally self-directed ” As adults mature they develop need for more autonomy

Taking control of your learning – Suggestions ! “resource person, and co-inquirer” Hence role of teacher shifts from dispenser of information to

Taking control of your learning – Suggestions ! Erase the view of yourself as a passive learner This identity is unsuitable in University It only impedes your academic progress and your FUTURE

Taking control of your learning – Suggestions ! Act as though you are certain to learn Research shows adults can learn almost anything Don’t let fear of previous academic failure deter you That was probably due to the way you were taught

Taking control of your learning – Suggestions ! Set realistic & attainable goals Affirm the value of your own background & experience

Skills & Competencies MOTIVATION Intrinsic motivation Normal adults are HIGHLY motivated to learn, but frequently impeded by educational, familial, work & economic barriers

Skills & Competencies The real problem is not lack of motivation …but to remove barriers that impede motivational impulses The real problem is not lack of motivation…

Skills & Competencies SELF-DISCIPLINE In traditional learning situation discipline was imposed on you When removed from such scene Feel frustrated at not being able to impose self-control

Skills & Competencies First step is to take control of your TIME “Nine-tenths of wisdom consists in being wise in time” – Teddy Roosevelt Law of physics: “It is harder to get an object moving than it is to keep it moving after it starts ”

Skills & Competencies ORGANIZE YOUR LEARNING Break down workload into manageable units Keep written log of your reading

Skills & Competencies IDENTIFY & LOCATE LEARNING RESOURCES Learn skills of resource acquisition Avoid procrastination

Skills & Competencies READING SKILLS Take a pre-test? Pro-active reading NOTETAKING SKILLS Understand the reasoning of your lecturer & not just write down everything

Skills & Competencies CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Ability to logically consider, react & process information in a sophisticated manner Involves critical evaluation & judgment Learn to challenge & alter assumptions

Skills & Competencies It is simply inquiry & discovery through probing Questions like: WHAT? WHY? WHY NOT? form the query base Preparing yourself in everyway to reach the SUMMIT !!!

Trust you’re hooked on becoming an effective LEARNER!

CONCLUSION LEARN MORE LEARN FASTER LIFE LONG LEARNING LEARN HOW TO LEARN TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LEARNING GOD LUCK !!!

The End
