HOW TO ACCESS FULL-TEXT ARTICLES A Tutorial for Global College Faculty and Students Professor Paul Tremblay & Professor Ingrid Wang Brooklyn Campus Library Long Island University

This Tutorial Covers: The procedures involved for accessing the full-text journal articles of citations retrieved from databases such as ProQuest, EBSCO, InfoTrac, CSA, ERIC or PSYCINFO

From Citations to Full-Text Articles: Options So, you performed a search in one of the library databases, how do you obtain the full- text articles? There are several options depending on vendor platforms and full-text availability of these journals.

The article is available full-text right from the database you are searching from. Click on the Full-Text HTML” or “PDF” icons and you are all set What if the full-text is NOT available from the database you are searching from? Option 1: Direct Access and Availability

After a search is performed from databases such as ProQuest, EBSCO, InfoTrac, CSA, and ERIC, you will be provided with a list of citations. The citations include information such as article title, journal title, author, brief summary and page numbers. If no direct full- text access is provided, you may see the Article Linker Symbol: Option 2: Article Linker

By clicking on “Article Linker”, you are accessing the library’s Serials Solution service to determine which, if any, database(s) carry the article in question.

If found, Serials Solution opens a new window with either the article itself (in HTML or PDF) or a direct link to it.

You may encounter different interfaces and intermediate steps before you obtain the full- text articles, depending on the depository database. Most databases (CSA, ProQuest, Ebsco, InfoTrac…) provide you with the options to preserve, in one way or another, the citation and/or the full-text of the article. If you have any questions or encounter any problems, do not give up. Contact us. Print, or Save

Option 3: Print Version Available There is a possibility that the article you wish to obtain is only available in print somewhere in a LIU campus. After you clicked on “Article Linker”, this window should open with this message

Click on “Journal” to access the online Library Catalog (LIUCAT).

The catalog informs you that the journal is available in print at our Post campus. You may perform an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) request (next section)

Option 4: InterLibrary Loan If we DO NOT have a journal that contains the article you want electronically or in print, the message will appear:

Option 4: InterLibrary Loan You will have to obtain the journal article from our Inter Library Loan Service. Go to the Brooklyn Library homepage, click on “Global College”, then click on “ Global College ILL Journal Request”.

On the Global College “Journal Request” page, do not forget to enter your library barcode (located on the back of your LIU ID card). Provide us with as much information as you possibly can.

What Happens Next? Once we obtained the material for you, we will you the article. Should you encounter any problem with ILL articles, please contact Ms. Lisa Burwell at or
