Lab #2 Title Accessibility of Software and Websites

Goals Students should: Realize there is an accessibility problem Learn about existing rules and regulations Learn about existing tools and their limitations Decide for themselves on where to draw the line (very hard to get it perfect)

Part 1 - Rules and Regulations Students have to familiarize themselves with rules about accessibility W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 Rehabilitation Act (Section 508) American Disabilities Act – Applying the ADA to the Internet IBM Developer Guidelines to Software Accessibility Software Engineering Code of Ethics (especially 1.07) Macromedia Flash and Accessibility

Part 2 - Tools Students have to familiarize themselves with a variety of accessibility tools Windows XP Accessibility Tools - Magnifier - Narrator - MouseKeys Microsoft Accessibility Tools IBM Home Page Reader Window-Eyes Xpress It! Elinks (Linux only!) Lynx

Part 3 – Websites/Software Students have to visit and rate websites using the provided “Website Accessibility Template” –Contact webmaster about their accessibility policies –Create graphical statistics of results Students have to use and rate software using the provided “Software Accessibility Template” –Create graphical statistics of results

Part 4 – Development Students have to visit websites discussing development of accessible software Students write a report detailing their views of accessibility toolkits Students will also discuss any changes in opinion from their initial reaction in Part 1
