WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO JAY BLAIR KATHRYN CIHLAR MARY ANN NANNEN Enhancing Education Through Technology 2010

EETT10 Goals for Midwest Central High School 10% Improvement for Boys on PSAE Emphasize National Educational Technology Standards for students (Illinois has adopted these national standards) Consider Web 2.0 tools to engage learners

EETT Focus Classrooms Math English Social Studies Science Special Education

August 2009 Teacher In-Service August 2009 Math teachers begin exploring the Ti 84+ and Ti Nspire Calculators

August 2009 Teacher In-Service Social Studies teachers begin exploring Atomic Learning Professional Development Opportunities

August 2009 Teacher In-Service Special Education teachers are using Atomic Learning to develop their Assistive Technology Tools skills.

August 2009 Teacher In-Service The English staff set department and personal goals for Atomic Learning self- paced modules.

Students are Using the Technology

Math Technology for Students Ti 84+ Calculators Ti Nspire Calculators Ti Navigator Reporting System for Ti 84+

Ti Nspire Calculator in Geometry In Geometry, students used the new TI-Nspire calculators to manipulate triangles to find out the least amount of information needed in order to prove two triangles are congruent. Students knew how to prove triangles are congruent by proving all the sides and all the angles congruent. This activity was a precursor activity to learning about SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAS. It also dealt with the ambiguous case of SSA. Mikalia Sauder

Ti 84+ Calculator in Algebra Concepts Today in my Algebra Concepts classes we graphed different quadratic equations and compared them to the parent function y = x^2. It appears that the students are becoming more competent w/ the calculators, because there were far fewer questions today as regards to how to operate the calculators than I have had in the past. Today was also a good example for the students of where technology in mathematics will help to speed up the problem, as opposed to slowing down the problem, which happens far too often in mathematics..

Ti 84+ Calculator in Algebra Concepts They seemed to be engaged in the material, and I know they enjoyed the fact that they did not have to physically graph the quadratics, because those can be very time consuming and there are a lot of chances for error. Being able to just type in the graphs gave us a chance to look over the graphs without having to worry about whether we had made a mistake on the graph of not, and instead gave us a chance to focus on the comparisons. Zach Roberts

Ti Nspire in Algebra Concepts The Ti Nspire Calculator is used in Mr. Roberts’ Algebra Concepts class, in spreadsheet mode, to assist students in understanding budgets.

Ti Nspire in Algebra Concepts Although similar to the spreadsheet, this Ti Nspire personal calculator is available for classroom use when the computer lab is not.

Students are Using Technology in English, Social Studies, and in the Library Microsoft Office 2007 Flip Cameras Discovery Education Kindle NetBook Classroom Smart Boards Handheld GPS (Heinhorst Grant Award)

Discovery Education Discovery Education has provided Midwest Central High School students with a wide range of video resource material that was previously unavailable to them.

Library Research Students are using the new computers to conduct research.

Web 2.0 Tools: Online Book Club An online Reading Club has been organized by Dee Hohenshell. Students enroll and then contribute their thoughts and insight.

Web 2.0 Tools--Blogging

Special Education Technology for Students Microsoft Office 2007 Kindle Digital Voice Recorders Digital Reading Pens (ARRA) Classroom SmartBoard

Interactive Smart Board Ms. Wheat has created several lessons for her math class.

Interactive Smart Board Students interact with the board to answer the questions.

Interactive Smart Board Students and teachers are learning the full power of the Interactive Smart Board.

Science Technology for Students Logger Pro 3 Microsoft Office 2007 Discovery Education Scanner Airliner Slate Smart Response Clickers

Airliner Slate The Airliner Slate can be moved anywhere in the room to allow for student interaction.

Airliner Slate Students pass the slate from person to person as they each take a turn answering the questions.

Teacher led Airliner Slate Lesson The Airliner Slate has become a popular alternative to the Smart Board. Here the slate is used in conjunction with the Smart Response Clicker System.

Smart Response Clickers Students use the Smart Response clickers to answer their daily 5 point quiz in Nicole Flowers’ Physical Science class.

Smart Response Clickers Ms. Flowers will know instantly how the students responded to the questions. She can immediately assess comprehension and understanding.

Smart Response Clickers In this instance, 6% of the students were not correct. Clarification of the question and/or the right answer happen in the teaching moment.
