K-10 Lunar Rover 3 Remote, extraterrestrial, surveillance robot under development at NASA Ames Instruments: 360 °, panoramic, 3D scanning laser Ground penetrating radar Color panoramic camera High resolution terrain imager

Current Power System 4 Ocean Server Battery Management System Smart Li-ion battery packs 14.4V, 6.6AHr (24) Battery management module Integrates battery stacks Ocean Server software Monitors battery status

Current Issues Batteries must be physically removed or plugged in through 3 ports to be charged Physical interaction is not an option ‘off-planet’ Need to find a way to remotely plug in K-10 and charge the batteries 5

Proposed Solution 6 Induction Based Charger: Create a two-part separable transformer, split between the rover and base station No direct human interaction required to charge rover batteries

How It Works 7 When the electric current alternates in a wire loop a magnetic field is created. A second wire near the magnetic field will experience and induced electrical charge. The induced charge will charge the battery without physical contact.

8 Ocean Server Boards Power Input AC-DC Converter DC-AC Inverter AC-DC Converter Isolated Power Regulation Primary Side Station Secondary Side Rover How It Was Done 60 Hz100 kHz

Modified Board 9 Meanwell SP Specs: 320W Power Output 120 V 60Hz Input Fixed switching frequency at 100KHz Isolated Power Transfer/ Optocoupler Protections: Short circuit / Overload / Over voltage

10 Power Regulation An optocoupler is used to send isolated voltage regulation information back to primary side of transformer. Secondary Primary Using components with similar electrical characteristics the system can be split in two. Existing optocoupler is a single component package.
