Leadership: What, Why, & How The Panelists Karen Butler-Purry (ECE, TAMU) Jacqueline Fisher (Lockheed Martin) Lise B. Hvatum (Schlumberger) Robin Murphy (CSE, TAMU) Danna Rother (IBM) Moderator Nancy Amato (CSE, TAMU)

Leadership: What, Why, & How What does "leadership" mean to you? Does it only apply to management positions in companies? What differences are there in leadership positions in academia and industry? What about different industrial settings, e.g., research vs development? Why would anyone want to take on the extra responsibilities that leadership positions require? Pay? Prestige? Power? etc.

Leadership: What, Why, & How How can you manage to be successful in a demanding career and to have a fulfilling life? Is it even possible? Do women have different leadership styles? Is it harder for women to get leadership positions? What about women from different cultures? How do you know when it is the right time in your career to seek a leadership position? Is it important to excel technically first? What can students do now to help prepare themselves so they will be strong candidates for leadership positions later in their careers?

Leadership: What, Why, & How References “Women Don’t Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide”, Babcock and Laschever “Our Separate Ways: Black & White Women and the Struggle for Professional Identity”, Edmondson Bell and Nkomo “First Break all the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently”, Buckingham and Coffman “Be Your Own Mentor: Strategies from Top Women on the Secrets of Success”, Wellington & Spence

How Can You Make a Difference? The Panelists Karen Butler-Purry (ECE, TAMU) Jacqueline Fisher (Lockheed Martin) Lise B. Hvatum (Schlumberger) Robin Murphy (CSE, TAMU) Danna Rother (IBM) Moderator Nancy Amato (CSE, TAMU)

How Can You Make a Difference? What are the benefits of having a diverse leadership team? What about a diverse work force? Are they different in industry & in academia? Is it a good career move to spend your time on this? How can you make your environment a more productive and comfortable place for women & underrepresented minorities? What practices do you think are most/least successful? How can you contribute differently over the course of your career (new hire, junior/senior manager, etc) Does it differ in academia and industry? Does it differ for men, women, and minorities?
