What is Universal Design? Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a new paradigm for teaching, learning, and assessment, drawing on new brain research and new media technologies to respond to individual learner differences. (http://www.cast.org/udl/)

How did it originate? Universal Design for Learning (UDL) draws upon and extends principles of universal design as used in architecture and product design. Architects practicing universal design create structures which accommodate the widest spectrum of users possible. In universally designed environments adaptability is subtle and integrated into the design. Designing for the divergent needs of special populations increases usability for everyone. The curb cut is a classic example. Although they were originally designed to help those in wheel chairs negotiate curbs, curb cuts ease travel for those pushing carriages, riding skateboards, pulling suitcases, or simply walking.

Principle 1: Equitable Use The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. GUIDELINES Provide the same means of use for all users: identical whenever possible; equivalent when not. Avoid segregating or stigmatizing any users. Provisions for privacy, security, and safety should be equally available to all users. Make the design appealing to all users. Two shoppers, one pushing a cart and the other using a power wheelchair, pass through open automatic doors.

Principle 2: Flexibility in Use The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. GUIDELINES Provide choice in methods of use. Accommodate right- or left-handed access and use. Facilitate the user's accuracy and precision. Provide adaptability to the user's pace. Principle 3: Simple & Intuitive Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user's experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level. GUIDELINES Eliminate unnecessary complexity. Be consistent with user expectations and intuition. Accommodate a wide range of literacy and language skills. Arrange information consistent with its importance. Provide effective prompting and feedback during and after task completion. Principle 4: Perceptible Information The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities. GUIDELINES Use different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile) for redundant presentation of essential information. Provide adequate contrast between essential information and its surroundings. Maximize "legibility" of essential information. Differentiate elements in ways that can be described (i.e., make it easy to give instructions or directions). Provide compatibility with a variety of techniques or devices used by people with sensory limitations. A person with low vision operates at close range a round thermostat with large numbers, tactile indicators, and audible cues.

Principle 5: Tolerance for Error The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. GUIDELINES Arrange elements to minimize hazards and errors: most used elements, most accessible; hazardous elements eliminated, isolated, or shielded. Provide warnings of hazards and errors. Provide fail safe features. Discourage unconscious action in tasks that require vigilance. Computer menu shows the arrow pointing to the "undo"function.

Principle 6: Low Physical Effort The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue. GUIDELINES Allow user to maintain a neutral body position. Use reasonable operating forces. Minimize repetitive actions. Minimize sustained physical effort A hand with closed fingers operates a lever door handle by pushing down.

Principle 7: Size & Space for Approach & Use Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user's body size, posture, or mobility. GUIDELINES Provide a clear line of sight to important elements for any seated or standing user. Make reach to all components comfortable for any seated or standing user. Accommodate variations in hand and grip size. Provide adequate space for the use of assistive devices or personal assistance. A woman in a power wheelchair passes through a wide subway gate..

UDL shifts old assumptions about teaching and learning in four fundamental ways: Students with disabilities fall along a continuum of learner differences rather than constituting a separate category. 2. Teacher adjustments for learner differences should occur for all students, not just those with disabilities. 3. Curriculum materials should be varied and diverse including digital and online resources, rather than centering on a single textbook. 4. Instead of remediating students so that they can learn from a set curriculum, curriculum should be made flexible to accommodate learner differences

The central practical premise of UDL is that a curriculum should include alternatives to make it accessible and appropriate for individuals with different backgrounds, learning styles, abilities, and disabilities in widely varied learning contexts. The "universal" in universal design does not imply one optimal solution for everyone. Rather, it reflects an awareness of the unique nature of each learner and the need to accommodate differences, creating learning experiences that suit the learner and maximize his or her ability to progress.
