American Tears A Patriotic Salute By Mrs. Czerkis

“Ask not what your country has done for you, but what you can do for your country.” John F. Kennedy – Inaugural Speech 1961

How can music make you feel more connected to your country? My father was an officer in the Vietnam War. He was shipped overseas for 12 months. My mom had to stay home with my sister and me. They kept in touch through writing letters to each other once a week. Although my dad was able to have one week vacation in Hawaii to meet my mom (R & R); he was only able to call home once over the course of his duty in Vietnam.

During the war (in combat), there wasn’t access to radios to listen to music while in Vietnam. During his career in the Army, he was exposed to Patriotic music all the time: – Change of command ceremonies – Parades for retirements – Promotion ceremonies When he hears songs like “Revelry”, “The Star Spangled Banner” & “America” he is easily transported back to his experiences in the military. He still gets chills from “America the Beautiful”, “Taps”, and all the Armed Forces Theme songs

The lyrics and instrumentation of “American Tears” set the mood for the song. At the beginning of the song, the music is soft and slow. These elements help me quietly reflect on the courage many men and women have had to show when facing danger while providing protection for our country. As the instruments and dynamics build, the lyrics become more intense. The lyrics cause an emotional connection in my heart which could actually bring me to tears. Describing the Music

“American Tears” by T. Jennings The song, “American Tears” helps me feel a deep connection to the sacrifices many soldiers have given in the past as well as present day. It reminds me that no matter what, we are all Americans. Ultimately, I think it is important for everyone to work together with pride for our country and acknowledging all that we have and can offer each other.
