Plagiarism and Paraphrasing The Right Way

What is plagiarism? Using another’s words or ideas without giving proper credit. This includes word-for-word copying, summarizing, changing only a couple of words and using another’s ideas as your own.

What is paraphrasing Writing that expresses an existing idea in an original way. This can be a short summary of a longer text. Credit must be given to the originator.

How do I give credit to another? With either exact quotes or paraphrasing: Provide acknowledgement in text Citation in reference bibliography

Exact Quotes The material (even one word in some cases) is bounded by double quotation marks. “Evidence for the status of women in Middle Eastern regions can be found through a variety of print and media sources” (Downie, 2006, p. 1).

Paraphrasing No quotation marks, but still needs credit. Downie (2006, p. 1) states that information sources on Middle Eastern womens’ status may be located through a variety of formats.

Your own work Your findings are original work and do not need attribution. In the literature review on womens’ status in the Middle East, I found that information can be located in a variety of articles, newspapers and books, as well as electronic sources.
