CARE has changed and expanded its mission Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere Goal: to eradicate poverty through long-term developmental work emergency relief

CARE serves the poor on many levels Strives for lasting change through

CARE serves the poor on many levels Strives for lasting change through Self-help Economic opportunity Emergency relief Influencing policy decisions Addressing discrimination Strengthening capacity for self-help Providing economic opportunity Delivering relief in emergencies Influencing policy decisions at all levels Addressing discrimination in all its forms

Local women lead CARE’s efforts Believe “equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty” Because of this belief, women are the main contributors and leaders of CARE’s community based efforts

CARE contributes in three ways Community-based efforts -Examples of CARE’s community based efforts include improving basic education, preventing the spread of HIV, increasing access to clean water and sanitation, expanding economic opportunity and protecting natural resources. -CARE began as purely a relief organization, and although it now has long term programs, it still delivers a tremendous amount of emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives. -In contrast, most of CARE’s long term programs involve agriculture and natural resources, cross-cutting initiatives, economic development, education, health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, water.

CARE contributes in three ways Community-based efforts Aid

CARE contributes in three ways Community-based efforts Aid Programs

CARE puts women, climate change, and HIV/AIDS as top priorities -In addition to region specific goals and relief work, CARE has overreaching goals for the world that are carried out as campaigns. -CARE’s campaigns are fueled by blogs, advertisements, donations. -The focus of the Let Her Live, Learn, and Earn campaigns are women’s health, education, and microfinancing. -The Human Face of Climate Change campaign addresses the fact that poor communities can’t rise out of their problems without confronting environmental inequalities first. -CARE’s HIV/AIDS campaign strives to educate populations and mitigate the disease through support of grassroots organizations

West Bank/Gaza illustrates CARE’s relief work 1948: provided CARE packages

West Bank/Gaza illustrates CARE’s relief work 1948: provided CARE packages Relief work today Includes basic needs assistance to trauma-coping activity implementation -CARE began its work in Palestine in 1948 by providing CARE packages to Palestinians after Britain’s 1947 partition plan -later evolved to support Palestinian organizations including the Palestinian National Authority and local NGOs -since 1994 it has worked to increase women’s empowerment, improve reproductive and public health, supply leadership training, and advocate fishery conservation, all through grassroots community based organizations (CBOs) led by women given edu in community and developmental skills -but its focus remains on relief work since the area remains structurally unstable

Haiti illustrates CARE’s focus on development Entered Haiti in 1954 after Hurricane Hazel -CARE first entered Haiti in 1954 after Hurricane Hazel to provide relief. -In 1959, CARE began long term development projects involving maternal and child nutrition, and by the 1970s, CARE expanded to included projects providing health care for preschool children, safe drinking water and income-generating activities. -Today there are projects in HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, maternal and child health, education, food security, and water and sanitation, along with relief services -And they work closely with NGOs, private companies, and the Haitian government for max success.

Haiti illustrates CARE’s focus on development Entered Haiti in 1954 after Hurricane Hazel Have since added health, education, and water programs 1959: maternal and child nutrition projects started Today: projects in HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, maternal and child health, education, food security, and water and sanitation, along with relief services Currently working on the construction of 2 water kiosks that will supply water to 1700 people

Haiti illustrates CARE’s focus on development CARE currently works to provide long term solutions for the cholera epidemic -Currently working on the construction of 2 water kiosks that will supply water to 1700 people within the cholera epidemic’s range - Are trying to lessen domestic/gender-based violence by improving the living conditions of camps setup after the earthquake - Are still providing direct aid (food, clothing, shelter) and educating citizens (mostly women) on how to organize camp grounds and keep order

CARE fights criticism as well as poverty Too much money spent on solicitations, employee salaries -CEO Helene D. Gayle makes over $400,000/yr -Are a few other CARE employees with even higher salaries (91% goes towards programs, 9% to advertising, fundraising, salaries, $700 million budget) -In some places, people argue there is too much relief work and not enough long term progress evident for such an old organization (78% goes to long term projects, 22% goes to relief work) -Have faced criticism from males in patriarchal societies who feel threatened by CARE’s empowerment of women

CARE fights criticism as well as poverty Too much money spent on solicitations, employee salaries Lack of long-term progress/accountability

CARE fights criticism as well as poverty Too much money spent on solicitations, employee salaries Lack of long-term progress/accountability From constrictive males in patriarchal societies

CARE has reached out to many -Although CARE has its adversaries, it’s hard to deny that CARE has had a worldwide impact -For example, CARE provided almost 7 million people with improved access to school and better quality edu -Helped more than 10 million protect themselves from HIV -And CARE’s vision, although seemingly impossible, has become more attainable with the work of CARE and organizations like it.
