Build instruments for hard x-rays that address 3 Thrust Areas: –X-ray pump-probe –XPCS –Coherent x-ray imaging Include one additional instrument, to address the soft-x- ray portions of pump-probe and coherent imaging Thrust Areas Detector development LUSI Scope

LUSI and LCLS Science AMO, other soft x-ray and diagnostics X-ray pump probe Near Experimental Hall (NEH) and Hutches (H1,H2,H3) Soft x-ray pick-off mirror in the FEE will provide a soft x-ray beamline for H1 (and possibly H2), allowing efficient switching between experiments Mirror system at end of NEH will provide for x-ray beam deflection to 3 hutches in FEH H1 H2 H3

A soft x-ray pick-off mirror in the FEE will provide a ‘soft x-ray beamline’ for Hutch 1 (and maybe Hutch 2), allowing easy switching between experiments

LUSI and LCLS Science Far Experimental Hall (FEH) and Hutches H4,H5,H6 XPCS Coherent X-ray Imaging HEDS H4 H5 H6

FEH XPCS Coherent x-ray imaging High energy density science

2-d Detector Development LCLS experiments need new detector technology Established LCLS Detector Advisory Committee to evaluate technology choices and monitor development –Next meeting Feb 9-10, 2006 Dual development strategy for fast 2-d detectors for ‘hard’ x-rays –Several technologies look promising, no clear leader –LCLS will pursue one strategy: Pixel Array Detector Initial development has begun –LUSI will try a different technology: Silicon Active Matrix MoU and technical addendum in place as of mid-April –Both prototypes should be ready by 2009 Continue to look at available commercial technologies Need 2-d detectors for soft x-rays

Streak Camera Development LCLS experiments can benefit from improvements of x-ray streak cameras. The streak camera can be a real aid in commissioning the x-ray split/delay, real time measurement of time delay in pump-probe LCLS is responsible for initiating this development, LUSI is considering the cost/schedule-science of assuming the streak camera development project.

SAC recommendations for Soft X-rays ‘Proceed’ with soft x-ray imaging of magnetic materials Soft x-ray pump probe – strengthen science case Soft x-ray RIXS – requires a ‘mature’ LCLS for this exciting science

Response to SAC recommendations for Soft X-rays ‘Proceed’ with soft x-ray imaging of magnetic materials –Incorporate into imaging team: added Jan Lüning as co-leader Soft x-ray pump probe – strengthen science case –Incorporate into pump-probe: added Anders Nilsson as a co-team leader. Soft x-ray RIXS – requires a ‘mature’ LCLS for this exciting science Original SAC review of LOIs: All LOIs can be ‘accommodated’ In one of five thrust areas.
