Preaching

4 Functions of Sermon Evangelistic (2 Tim 4:5) Didactic (Rom 12:7) Therapeutic (Acts 3:6-16) Prophetic

Principles of Sermon 1. It must contribute to the worship of God. 2. It must be Christ-centered. 3. It must expound the Word to the collective life where the people are. 4. It must be dependent upon the power of God. 5. The preacher must be careful using humor or interesting stories so that they may not divert focus away from God.

Location of Sermon Traditionally at the end of the service, except in the case of communion and baptism. 2 parts: Preparation to God’s Word; Response to God’s Word.

4 Questions to ask in sermon preparation 1. What does the text say? Historical-critical meaning of the text: Exegesis. 2. How does it apply to my personal life? Personal application. 3. How does it apply to all congregation? Application to the general congregation. 4. How can I express its meaning in everyday language? Relevant expression.

Definition of Creed “Comprehensive short formula of Christian faith expressed in language of the first person dignified enough for frequent use at public worship” (Runia). “Dogma set to liturgy” (Ralph Martin).

Announcement 1. It is not part of worship. 2. Timing is critical to prevent announcement from interrupting the worship service. Either before or after the service. 3. It may be a good idea to use the time for people to greet one another or to welcome visitors.
