Presentation transcript:

TIMING THE CAM TO THE CRANK u Timing marks facing each other u Timing marks a specified number of links apart u Timing marks aligned with colored links on the chain u Timing marks align with marks on head and block

TIMING THE CAM TO THE CRANK u Match old parts to new ones u Specificily match keyway and timing mark u Make sure # 1 piston is at TDC when marks are lined up u Off brands are noted for inaccurate timing marks

MANIFOLDS u Intake u Exhaust Page 206

INTAKE MANIFOLD u Passages are called Runners u Carburator manifolds flow Fuel and Air u Runner size is a compromise u Fuel injection manifolds can have sharper bends u Space below Carb is called the plenum

MANIFOLD RUNNERS u One runner feeding 2 cylinders are called Siamese Runners u Dual Plane Manifold u Single Plane Manifold u Open and Closed Intake Manifolds Open manifolds require sheet metal valley cover

COOLANT PASSAGE u Passage connects cylinder heads at front of engine u Passage contains provision for the thermostat u Passage provides attachment for thermostat housing u Thermostat housing connects to upper radiator hose

MULTIPLE RUNNER MANIFOLDS u Two or more runners can used with multi valve heads u One runner has a butterfly, that open at a specified RPM

EXHAUST CROSSOVER PASSAGE u Runs under plenum of intake manifold between heads u Heat Riser (one side) closes at cooler tempretures u Forcing all exhaust thru crossover passage heating plenum u Bi-Metal Spring or Vacuum operated u Heated Air Intake

EXHAUST MANIFOLDS u Stock Cast Iron u Headers - Primary tube - Collector u Factory Headers

TURBOCHARGERS u Exhaust driven Supercharger u Draw through u Blow through u Waste Gate

BOOST u Measured in PSI above atmospheric pressure u Turbo Lag u Intercoolers u Lubrication

SUPERCHARGERS u Scroll-type u Roots-type u Draw through u Blow through

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER u POWER DEPENDS ON THE EFFICIENCY OF THE PUMP u BHP useable horsepower at the crankshaft u Net HP maxpower all accessories on

COMPRESSION RATIO & ENGINE POWER u Compression ratio effects engine power u Each point of increase is worth about 4%
