CPR Competency Spring 2006

CPR Competency  American Heart Association established guidelines in 1974  Updates published in 1980, 1986, 1992, and 2000  36 months and 380 international experts in the field

CPR Competency  Significant changes for adult CPR  “Child is defined as a patient from 1 year to puberty. Anyone older is treated as an “Adult”  “Phone first” and get AED for all sudden collapses  Perform 5 cycles of CPR and then Phone for hypoxic or asphyxial arrest (drowning, drug overdose, etc.)

CPR Competency  Head-tilt, chin-lift OK to open airway  If suspected c-spine injury try jaw thrust first.  1 rescuer CPR compression to breath ratio – 30:2  compressions at 100/min.  2 rescuer CPR compression to breath ratio – 30:2  compressions at 100/min

CPR Competency  Once advanced airway is placed compressions continue at 100/min with no pause for breath  Breath rate no more than 8 – 10/min.  Compressor should rotate or be relieved every 2 min.

CPR Competency This years mantra: Push hard, push fast! Breathe easy!
