Big Ideas & Enduring Outcomes Science “Change Over Time” Natural selection is the mechanism of evolution. Natural selection is the mechanism of evolution. Practical: Connect genetic make-up of an individual to a physical trait. Analytical and Practical: Simulate natural selection to show how a species can change over time depending on its adaptations and the environment in which it lives. Analytical, Creative and Practical: Experiment with a model of how certain adaptations can be advantages or disadvantages and relate the experience to real life examples. Inquiry instruction throughout- Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, Evaluate

Big Ideas & Enduring Outcomes Math Inquiry Not all of the mathematical principles are necessary if we solve problems in alternate ways. Students will create 3 different methods for solving a single problem. (Analytical, creative) Compare and contrast two methods of solving to decide which is best in the situation. (Analytical, practical)

Math Lesson Using Cooperative Learning Model Strategic Grouping for Skill Level Each group has 3 coordinates to plot and form a triangle. Math lesson continued… Must explain at least 1 time when the group differed on their method and why they chose to go the way they did. Teacher circulates to listen to discussion, promote questioning of group members, monitor participation

Professional Development Workshop Cooperative Learning can be used in ANY subject area. Promotes academic learning, social skills, and tolerance of differences among students. Key things must be taught and in place in order to be successful (social skills, collaborative skills, group processing)

PD workshop continued… Teacher has a definite role: set structure, define individual roles in group, set task and deadline, and monitor throughout. Practice in workshop using a variety of subject areas.
