What is a Setter? Usually take the second ball in every play Mostly set the ball with their hands Can use their forearms if necessary Put the ball high in the air for the hitter to hit it Can play front row and back row

What is a Hitter? Usually take control of the 3rd contact Hit the ball over the net with their hand Goal is to score on the opponent Can play front row and back row There are different hitters: –Outside Attacker –Middle Attacker –Opposite Attacker –Back Row Attacker

What is a Libero? The libero is a fairly new position Only one libero is allowed on the court The libero is only allowed to play back row He or she can substitute back row for any player Can not overhand set in front of the 10ft line The libero wears a different colored jersey from the rest of the team Is allowed to serve for one rotation in college

What is a Defensive Specialist? Someone who plays back row for a front row player who is not as good at playing back row Is usually one of the better passers and defenders on the team There can be more than one defensive specialists on the court Is allowed to serve

Setting Overhand - use hands to push ball high in the air - ball must hit both hands at the same time Forearm - less precise - more powerful “Sets” are plays Sets must go to the right area Poor setting can mean less chance to score

Hitting Player uses hand to “hit” the ball over the net Hit can land anywhere on the other side of the court Can be the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd contact Different ways to score – tip – roll shot

Passing Is the 1st contact of the 3 allowed Taken after the opposing team serves the ball over the net Player takes the ball with his or her forearms Requires quickness and repetition Hardest skill in volleyball Any player is allowed to pass The libero or defensive specialist should try to pass every ball

Digging First contact after the opposing team hits the ball over the net Can require diving Goal is to stop the other team from scoring Many types of digs - Forearm - Over hand - Pancake

Blocking First line of defense Requires good timing for when to jump Player jumps with both arms up to try to stop the opposing hitters ball from crossing the net Any front row player can block DON’T touch the net

Out of System Plays (Any play that is not perfectly smooth) If the setter can’t take 2nd ball the libero sets Requires extra communication It is still possible to score Players may have to switch positions for the rally Happen frequently

Substitution Rules Each team gets 12 subs A player can only play one position per game, but may sub in and out as many times as needed Libero does not take up a substitution Libero can go in for any player back row as many times as needed Substitutions must occur in front of the 10 foot line
