MINDFUL DESIGN PRACTICE DZ 52005 PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF MDes RESEARCH PROJECT DESIGN of TRANSITIONAL SPACES A CONTEXT FOR INVESTIGATING URBAN ENVIRONMENTWITHIN TOWN CENTRES The design brief aims to develop ideas based on functionality of urban spaces and how they are constantly changing to meet current and future economic and cultural trends. The research project would assess the variety of existing elements in town centres and make proposals for future developments in conjunction with a variety of different stakeholders. The research case study for TRANSITIONAL SPACES was the town of KIRKCALDY which is currently going through a state of transition due to some new developments.

RATIONALE and CONTEXT : KIRKCALDY WAYFINDING SIGNAGE TOWN WALKS HIGH STREET SPACES MAPPING SOLUTIONS ARTSCAPES ENTRY PORTALS ACCESS POINTS ZONING AREAS

RATIONALE and CONTEXT : HIGH STREET ENVIRONMENT The initial project remit became too wide to have a real focus on a specific output for a project realisation. Focus on the HIGH STREET ENVIRONMENT as a more realistic challenge. HUBS are formed where junctions meet and interact

METHODS : KNOWLEDGE SWATCHES HOW WILL SUCCESS BE MEASURED AGAINST INITIAL DESIGN PROJECT AIMS ? use of post-it pads to mind map against the project questions PROJECT FOCUS QUANTIFY NEEDS PROJECT DETAIL ASSESS COSTS SEPT 2012 METHODS : KNOWLEDGE SWATCHES Knowledge swatches were used to develop design thinking for the project. The overall aim was to establish a focal point for the research development.

Inspiration came from a wide variety of sources within the UK and abroad. Sustainability is a major factor in creating new urbanism and most case study examples involved wide participation and consultation through different design methods.

METHODS : COMMUNICATION DESIGN of TRANSITIONAL SPACES in TOWN CENTRES BLOGGING became a source of information referencing to the wide range of urban regeneration strategies that are happening all over the world. The Wordpress Blog IONSPACE7 has become the project sketchbook for design thinking for the Masters of Design Project. The on-line process has been useful as a design method tool enabling design thinking to be recorded in a digital way. http://ionspace7.com
