GENERAL LABORATORY INFORMATION Lab Manual: Lab Manual for Chemistry 1040 (purchase at Copy-X, 219 Lincoln Ave (corner of 3rd and Lincoln). Checking out: Most of you will check out of the lab during the last scheduled laboratory period. If you drop the course during the semester, check-out must be done within 2 weeks after the drop date. Otherwise you will be assessed a $10.00 fine. Payment of Fines: goggles rental fee

GENERAL LABORATORY INFORMATION (continued) Lab work sheets: Follow the instructions in lab manual and hand in before leave for the day. Attendance: If you are absent from the lab, instructor’s PRIOR approval is needed to schedule a make-up lab, or you will suffer penalties. Make-up Lab: must be completed BEFORE the end of the following week, please consult with me as soon as possible.

CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT GOGGLE POLICY According to the state law, you must wear splash-proof goggles whenever you are in lab. Every one is prohibited from working in lab without wearing proper goggles. Safety goggles can be purchased from the ACS Student Affiliates the second week before the labs at the 4th floor chemistry stockroom (PHYS 4148) or from the University Union Bookstore. ACS-SA only accept cash or check, but not PentherCard. In case you forget to bring the goggles, you may rent a pair of goggles from Chemistry Stockroom (PHYS 3409), but only ONCE per semester. 1st time: $10 rental fee 2nd time: No exceptions The stockroom only accept students’ IDs. Please carry an ID, not money. You will not be allowed to make up the lab because of the goggle problems. Suggestion: Store your goggles in your lab drawer.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES Two hours lab includes pre-lab lecture. Due to safety regulations, you may NOT be able to perform the experiment if you miss or you are late more than 10 mins for the pre-lab discussion without valid reasons and you will NOT be allowed to make-up the experiment. Absence from the lab without instructor’s prior approval and proper documents will lose the make-up chance. Any student missing an experiment without a valid, verifiable, written reason (medical or family emergency) will get a “ZERO” on that lab.

LABORATORY SAFETY Wear goggles all the times. Wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals, socks with sandals, flip-flops, etc. Wear long pants. Wear gloves and work in the hoods if necessary. No food or beverages in the lab; no chewing gum and tobacco. No smoking. No cell phone to communicate with someone, including text message. (Except 911) Don’t listen to music via any devices. Don’t play in the lab. Don’t invite friends to visit you during lab. Don’t perform unauthorized experiments. LAB HAZARDS Chemical hazards: flammable, corrosive, oxidants, heat sensitive Be careful to all chemicals when you work with them. Health hazards: toxic (acute or chronic) Happened by contact with the skin or eye, inhalation or ingestion. Physical hazards: cut and burn Broken glassware, Bunsen burner or stuffs extremely hot or cold. The hazards of fire: Bunsen burner Combustible or flammable chemicals, cloth and hair Follow all the instructions. Consult the instructor.

ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES Report to the instructor. If severe, call 911 immediately. If minor cuts or minor burns, seek aids at the Stockroom, 3409. Be familiar with the location of the safety equipments in the lab and the location of both lab exits and nearby building exits.

GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICE Read lab manual before you come to the lab. Caring for all the equipments and instruments. Keeping your work area and common work areas clean and free of trash. Properly disposing of chemicals, solutions, reagents and all kinds of wastes. Consulting the instructor when you are not sure about the lab work.

NOTICE Scientific experiments and the results of those experiments should be approached and reported objectively, without bias. We recognize that there may be times when, in spite of your best efforts, things will not go well for you in the lab. If this happens, see your instructor immediately for guidance. If you have given a good effort on the experiment, then the least you should do is prepare a lab report including your experimental data, however bad you may think it to be. Never make-up results (“dry lab”) or borrow results from others. Copying background information, results, answers, and calculations from someone else’s lab report constitutes cheating and is grounds for an “F” in the course.

Locks: To open a lock, first turn dial right two or more complete turns, then stop at the first number, then turn left one complete turn past the first number to the second number, then turn right to the third number. “Open sesame!” Check All Glassware and Equipments: Replace in stockroom Record your drawer number and padlock combination in your lab manual. Sign your name in the sign-in sheet and return it to your instructor.
