Objective Calculate the amount of chemical needed to treat dissolved oxygen at 4 ppm (mg/L) in 50 L/hr H 2 O.

Dissolved Oxygen Treatment O 2 Feed Water Storage Tank O 2 Na 2 SO 3 Na 2 SO 4 Na 2 SO 3 + ½ O 2  Na 2 SO 4

Known H 2 O mass flow rate: 50,000 g/hr (50 L/hr) O 2 mass flow rate in 50 L/hr H 2 O: 0.2 g/hr

Unknown Amount of Na 2 SO 3 needed to treat 0.2 g/hr O 2 in 50 L/hr H 2 O.

Calculation Basis: 100 g of Na 2 SO 3 Na 2 SO 3 + ½ O 2  Na 2 SO 4

(1) Na 2 SO 3 + (½) O 2  (1) Na 2 SO 4

Na 2 SO 3 + ½ O 2  Na 2 SO 4

Na 2 SO 3 and O 2 Ratio

O 2 mass flow rate in 50 L H 2 O: 0.2 g/hr Needed 2 g/hr Na 2 SO 3 to treat (reacts) 0.2 g/hr O 2 in 50 L/hr of H 2 O

Conclusions Need 2 g/hr Na 2 SO 3 to treat 0.2 g/hr O 2 in 50 L/hr of H 2 O
