Overview Introduction Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major

Project Definition & Goal New Project Definition Design a collection of knowledge to meet a rising demand for new technologies, ideologies, fields, and needs Goals  Train students’ analytical thinking  Prepare student with strong technical & scientific background  Useful for society Introduction Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major

Potential Users Students Faculty Companies/Prospective market Public Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Constraints Hard to be accepted by public Limited resources due to lack of history in this new field Lack of support from faculty and low student enrollment Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Design Process Define  Redefine the problem  Identify constraints and goals  Characterize user types Research  Online research based on their interests  Think “why (and how) all engineering majors were created at the first place?” Brainstorm  Generate 100 great ideas Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Design Process Vote  Eliminate crazy ideas  Vote top 10 ideas Focus  Refine our major based on Professor Goldberg’s feedback Delegate  Divide into 3 subgroups based on their personal interest/knowledge  Each subgroup refines one major Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Design Process Prototype  Detailed description of each major Test  Survey Refine  Update and choose our best design Present Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Designing a New Major Conservative Design Energy Management Engineering Intermediate Design Aviation & Technology Engineering Radical Design Security Engineering Survey Chosen Major Top 3 Designs Introduction

ENERGY MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING

Energy Management Engineering Methods of conserving energy Increasing our nation’s energy supplies & security Use of mathematical & finance models Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Pros Maintain healthy economy & environment Existing courses & faculties Cons Scope of topics is too broad Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Evaluation Competition within U.S.A. & worldwide  New York Institute of Technology  University of Missouri – Columbia Impossible to make it a 4-year degree program Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

AVIATION & TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING

Aviation & Technology Engineering Aeronautical Technology  Aircraft Science  Electrical System Aviation Administration Technology  Airport & Airline Management Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Pros Diverse employment opportunities Various graduates programs Cons Limited facilities Lack of core classes in UCB Expensive technical lab Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval needed Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Evaluation Competition  Stanford University  UCLA  Purdue University Creates many opportunities Require a great amount of funding Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

SECURITY ENGINEERING

Security Engineering Building dependable system in the face of malice Cross disciplinary with:  Cryptography  Physical technology security  Computer security  Applied psychology  Societal processes Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Fields of Application Computer Security  Design secured computer system through software and hardware Physical Security  Analyze & design a facility system Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Pros High chance of government funding UCB has enough resources Cons High risk investment Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

Evaluation No direct competition within U.S.A. & worldwide Needs time to develop Increasing job opportunities Top 3 Designs Survey Chosen Major Introduction

SURVEY ANALYSIS

Purpose To provide quantitative information regarding  the main factor that the target group consider when choosing their major  the targets’ interests towards each of our three designed majors Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Procedure Random Sampling Distributed questionnaires to students at College Park High School (12 out of 20) Diablo Valley College (20 out of 40) UC- Berkeley (21 out of 25)  8 (38%) were from students with undeclared major  13 (62%) were from students with a major Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Questionnaire Questions regarding students background:  Level of education  Age  Gender  Intended or current major Choose the main factor that influences them when deciding on a major Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Questionnaire Rate their interests toward: (Given the definition)  Energy Management Engineering  Aviation and Technology Engineering  Security Engineering Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 1. The distribution of the samples

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 2. The students’ main concern when they were choosing a major

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 3. Average Interest Level of each major by each target group

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 4. Average interest level of each major by different age ranges

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 5. Average interest level of each major by genders

Average interest level of each major by different majors  Technical majors Biological Sciences Physical Sciences Engineering & etc.  Non-technical majors Business Arts and Humanities Social Sciences Law  Other majors Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 6. Average interest level of each majors by students with different majors

Survey Results & Analysis Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs Fig 7. Average interest level of each majors in general

According to our survey results and analysis  Students choose their major according to job opportunity of the major personal interest towards the major  Security Engineering chosen as our top design because highest overall interest level rated by the sampled students high job demand for security related field in the recent market Conclusion Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Security Engineering Requirement All basic Physics Math requirements Computer Science & Electrical Engineering department Additional  Psychology  Senior Project in Security Engineering Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs

Security Engineering Focus Computer Security  CS classes  Additional Privacy, Security, and Cryptography Security in Computer System Independent Study Physical Security  Electrical E. classes  Civil E. classes  Architecture classes  Additional Independent Study Survey Chosen Major Introduction Top 3 Designs
