SPIE strives to provide Chapter Members with conference exposure. Each year, Chapter officers have an opportunity to attend an SPIE meeting with special assistance from the Society. Officers are encouraged to attend the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop at Optics + Photonics. In 2009, more than 85 students from 22 different countries won Travel Grants and formed the core of over 130 Student Chapter Members at the leadership workshop. One grant per Chapter each year No person may receive the grant more than once Up to $1,000 US for travel/food/lodging One conference fee waiver Bonus: Use the grant to attend the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop at Optics + Photonics and receive up to seven days of lodging and one course, free 3

What is included with the Officer Travel Grant? The award supports travel, food, and lodging ( six nights ) costs associated with attending the meeting, conference registration fee. Do I need to use the Travel Grant to go to the O&P? No, you may use the grant to attend any official SPIE conference. However, Optics + Photonics is our premiere student-focused conference providing the most student activities, networking opportunities, and fun of all our conferences. Students applying for a Travel Grant to attend any meeting other than Optics + Photonics should submit their applications and supporting documentation at least 12 weeks before the first day of the conference. 4

Are there any restrictions/rules on how spend the money? Travel Grant money may only be used to reimburse expenses for travel, food, and lodging. And no, Luis Vuitton bags are not necessary travel expenses. :-) Beyond the basic restrictions of common sense, we do not require you to use specific vendors, airlines, or spend the travel money in a specific way. 1. The Student Chapter must be in good standing, it must have a minimum of ten (10) current SPIE members and have submitted a report on chapter activities. 2. One student per chapter should be nominated as the Travel Grant applicant. Ideally, this is a decision undertaken by the chapter. 3. Previous Chapter Officer Travel Grant awardees are not eligible. This award is designed to encourage new officers to contribute to the chapter. Do I need to be a Chapter Officer to use the Travel Grant? No, officers are encouraged to use it as an incentive/reward for service to the Chapter however, it can just as easily be used as a tool to recruit/identify new officers. The Chapter, as a whole, should decide who will be the designated Travel Grant recipient. 8
