In the field, students apply their classroom knowledge to real-world settings, such as child and family service agencies, government offices, hospitals, public schools, and community mental health centers Geographic placement areas ranging from urban to rural Approximately 475 agencies (southeastern Michigan, nationally, and internationally) OFFICE OF FIELD INSTRUCTION 7

CURRICULUM TRACK FIELD LETTER SENT VIA PLACEMENT REQUEST MATERIALS DUE START/END FIELD PLACEMENT Advanced Standing June 4, 2009July 10, 2009September – August 20-MonthJune 4, 2009July 10, 2009September - April 16-MonthJune 4, 2009 Special Information Session September 14 th ~ 4pm-5pm October 9, 2009 January – December * SPECIAL PROGRAMS (see next slide) June 4, 2009June 26, 2009September - August * Students attend field placement typically 2 days per week. Those in the 16-month track attend 4 days per week in the Spring/Summer. FIELD PLACEMENT TIMELINE 8

SPECIAL PROGRAM INFORMATION SPECIAL PROGAMS/AGENCIES Require that students start their field placement in the Fall term Out of Sequence: Geriatric Scholars National Community Scholars University for The Child & Family UM Psych Clinic SafeHouse Field Placement Request Materials for these programs are due June 26, 2009 (except Geriatric Scholars) Employment-based proposals- contact the field office for guidance NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL FIELD PLACEMENTS Students MUST follow the 16-month schedule AND START their domestic/local field placement in the Fall (Sept.) term National or International experiences take place in the Spring/Summer term (May- August- 4-5 days per week) Proposals for these experiences are due the October 16, 2009 Visit Office of Global Activities web page for more information: nal-InternationalPlacement.html 9

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Almost all fieldwork sites that serve children, youth and the elderly will require that student’s (at their own expense) complete the following in order to be considered for placement: Criminal background check Drug /substance/screening Proof of immunizations Submit additional reference letters (cannot use those letters that were submitted with application to the program) Fingerprint application information can be found here: Students need to inquire about these during their initial contact with the fieldwork site Not having access to transportation will limit placement options. Transportation assistance is available for those traveling 45+ miles to placement 10

DUE DATES June 4, 2009 Incoming 2009 class information is ed to your umich.edu account July 10, 2009 Field Placement Request Applications are due July and August Fieldwork site interviews (in-person or via telephone) Required Pre-field orientation sessions: – Sept. 3 rd 1pm-5pm for Foundation – Sept. 4 th 8am-12noon for Advanced Sept. 8 th Field placement starts this week 11

PLACEMENT REQUEST APPLICATION Field Placement Request Application consists of: – An online application where you will indicate your top 6 placement choices for consideration – Uploading (not ing) your Goal Statement when submitting your application – Uploading (not ing) your Resume when submitting your application You submit these documents online and they are shared electronically with prospective fieldwork sites (this is the link to essential field placement instructions and resources) Placement listings can be reviewed at any time:

GOAL STATEMENT One page statement discussing your professional goals, your learning style, and your career aspirations. Do not include personal information or agency specific requests. Include these 3 main points: – What are your professional accomplishments? – What skills do you want to learn? – What are your long-term career goals? 13

RESUME Two page document Easy to read format and style Skilled-based Use action verbs Demonstration of your work, volunteer, and internship experiences (classroom-based experiences count too) Review, edit and seek feedback 14

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Once you submit your online application, you will receive an assigning you to a Field Faculty person with their contact information Work on your application materials, your Goal Statement, update your Resume, and any additional paperwork required right away Contact your assigned Field Faculty person with ANY questions Appointments can be made with your Field Faculty via telephone or in-person REMEMBER: Stay in contact with your Field Faculty on a continuous basis until you are placed 15
