Earth as seen from space, 1968

Asia

The flag: do you know what the four smaller stars mean?

We are all ‘citizens’…  ‘citizen’ means: a member … of …  community society nation  can you be….. ’a citizen of the world ’? Why do some Hong Kong people use this phrase to describe themselves??

IDENTITY and membership  IDENTITY: Who am I? Simple, right?  We discuss “identities” in this course: ‘race’, ethnicity’, religion, gender... Your profession, your memberships… Where you live…  Your IDENTITIES will change after graduation  BUT… identities are COMPLICATED

Miao Christians in Yunnan: What is their “identity”?

Villagers in Vietnam: how many ‘identities’?

What about… ‘race’?  Is it a useful concept??  Are you a member of a ‘race’?  Do you owe loyalty to a ‘race’?  Does ‘race’ go with national citizenship?  What about the people in the next pictures?…..

Can you guess his/ her nationality or ethnicity?  Chinese?  Japanese?  Korean?  Malaysian?  Vietnamese?

Natural resources, and citizenship… Making money, versus… conservation of resources…?

A common interest… a common citizenship….

After taking this course… You will look at these pictures differently …  thoughts and ideas  plans  a new sense of citizenship? 

Learning activities…  Exploration, discussion, guest speakers  Lectures (what social scientists can tell us about identities and citizenship in Asia and the world)  Two papers (short assignment, term paper)  Participation in discussions  Presentations  Off-campus interviews and conversations
