BREDOM CINDI campaign 2009 Roscoe et al., 2010

BREDOM Outlook New telescope head for all sites Possible new stations: Guam: 13°N, 145°E in West Pacific, cooperation with AWI Potsdam, focus on marine chemistry, transport from ocean to stratosphere, very often low ozone Manaus: 3°S, 60°W, Brazil, forest station, cooperation with University of Sao Paulo, focus on biogenic emissions, biomass burning (-> HCHO, CHOCHO) Shiva campaign around Borneo in 2011 Development of new MAX-DOAS system for Deutsche Bucht (cooperation with BSH)

BREDOM BREDOM – Ny-Ålesund Ny-Ålesund (79° N, 12° E, 15 m asl) first test of off-axis in April 1998 MAX-DOAS since 1999 (2 directions) since March 2002 several LOS (scanning), different azimuth from 2010 onwards One Acton and one Oriel spectrometer with Andor CCD‘s covering 320 – 570 nm Very clean site -> mainly validation of stratospheric absorbers, but also retrieval of halogen oxides (e.g. during LOE‘s (low ozone events) Measurements of ozone, NO 2, BrO, OClO, tropospheric IO, BrO, in case of local pollution events (ship emissions) NO2, HCHO, and CHOCHO)

BREDOM BREDOM – Ny-Ålesund in high latitudes, GOME-2 and SCIAMACHY provide up to 12 measurements per day this facilitates observation of diurnal variation of e.g. NO 2 and opens new possibilities for validation GOME-2 and SCIAMACHY measurements within 200 km scatter as result of varying SZA zenith-sky and nadir AMF are comparable

BREDOM BREDOM – Ny-Ålesund Ground-based, satellite and model OClO at the time of overflight of the satellite Excellent agreement, see Oetjen et al., 2009 black line: temperature gray-shaded area: potential vorticity Ny-Ålesund

BREDOM BREDOM – Ny-Ålesund

BREDOM BREDOM – Bremen Bremen (53° N, 9° E, 30 m asl) MAX-DOAS since 2000 (2 directions) since October 2002 scanning Urban site Two Acton spectrometer with Roper CCD‘s covering 325 – 570 nm Measurements of ozone, NO 2, BrO, (OClO), tropospheric NO 2, HCHO, CHOCHO

BREDOM BREDOM – Bremen 1 st Workshop on MAX-DOAS observations over East Asia and Russia 8-9 February 2010, Yokohama

BREDOM BREDOM – Bremen In situ vs. MAX-DOAS 2010 Correlation 0.68 Slope 1.2 In situ affected by interference?

BREDOM BREDOM – Heraklion (Crete) Heraklion (32° N, 25° E, 115 m asl) MAX-DOAS since spectrometer (Acton with Roper-CCD, Oriel with Andor-CCD) covering 325 – 560 nm Moderately polluted Measurements of ozone, NO 2, BrO, tropospheric NO 2, HCHO, CHOCHO due to local pollution and biomass burning plumes

BREDOM BREDOM – Mérida (Venezuela) Merida (8° N, 71° W, 4800 asl) setup in March 2004 one spectrometer covering 325 – 410 nm free troposphere or upper edge of boundary layer measurements of ozone, NO 2, and in case of biomass burning plumes HCHO

BREDOM Different viewing angles show different HCHO slant columns -> from that HCHO profiles can be retrieved BREDOM – Mérida (Venezuela) HCHO in free troposphere

BREDOM Formaldehyde volume mixing ratios close to the measurement site in Mérida correlates well with the monthly mean fire counts above the Llanos in Venezuela. Due to the prevailing wind direction (East) air masses from the biomass burning regions could be detected from the MAX-DOAS instrument BREDOM – Mérida (Venezuela)

BREDOM BREDOM – Nairobi Nairobi (1° S, 37° E, 1625 m asl) MAX-DOAS since spectrometer (Oriel with Andor-CCD‘s) covering 325 – 565 nm Semi-urban, moderate polluted Measurements of ozone, NO 2, BrO, tropospheric NO 2, HCHO, CHOCHO due to local pollution and biomass burning plumes (very rare)

BREDOM BREDOM – Nairobi Correlation between wind direction and NO 2 surface
