The Vikings. By Kim and Michaela.

Where did they come from? The Vikings came from Scandinavia. Scandinavia is made up from Norway,Sweden and Denmark.

What did they do? They travelled over to countries and stole their goods. They held meetings called ‘things’.

Viking community. Vikings were divided into small communities. The popular group is the king, war leader and noble. The next important group was the farmer, trader, blacksmith and the shipbuilder. The least important group was the house servant and the thrall.

Viking crafts. Viking craft workers made splendid things. Wood was carved into beautiful things to decorate ships, carts and furniture.

Travelling. They travelled over to foreign lands to trade leather, timber and weapons. They traded slaves for wine, gold and glass. They often sailed to better lands where weather was warmer and life was easier.

Vikings in Ireland The first Viking raid was on Lambay island near Dublin in 795 AD. Irish people were terrified of the Vikings. They built stone towers to protect people when the Vikings attacked.

Battle of Clontarf. The Battle of Clontarf happened on Good Friday in 1014. Brian Boru was the high king at the time. After the battle the Vikings had no power in Ireland.

What did they do for us? They brought money, gold and jewellery. The taught us trades like carpenters, weavers and blacksmiths.
