VGrids Virtual Grids in MiG

Idea Virtual organizations are a central point in the Grid model VO’s share –Resources –Files –Credits A VO is a set of users

VO’s are hard Must everything be shared within a VO? –No sub-accounting? How does a resource prefer a VO –Exclusively allow a VO? –What if a large resource should service multiple VOs’ What if these VOs should be prioritized? How do users manage which account to use for a job?

A simple solution We add Virtual Grids to MiG A VGrid is just like an ordinary Grid except is has no hardware A VGrid has authorized users –A users can be a member of multible VGrids

Files in VGrids A user must keep his personal home- directory independent of which VGrid he works in But VGrids can have a common directory where only members of the VGrid are allowed –Do we need finer grained control than that?

Accounting i VGrids Jobs are submitted to a VGrid –Thus accounting is simply done as accounting within one Grid A VO can manage resources more fine- grained –Not all credits are available to all users

Resources and VGrids A resource can meet special obligations towards a user-group by participating is VGrid This VGrid is represented by a users on the resource –Thus local fair-share is directly handled in Grid level also

Inter VGrid features If a VGrid has a slot it cannot fill it can choose to sell this slot to another VGrid If a VGrid has more jobs that resources it can choose to purchase a slot from another VGrid The generic Grid is simply a VGrid as all others which can then sell an buy slots

Other Advantages of VGrids VOs can design their own –Entry page –Monitor –Statistics VGrids can exist across multible Grids Imagine that DK and N has each their MiG based Grid but a Dalton VGrid can include resources on both Grids

Work to do…? Are VGrids the way forward for MiG? At first glance this should be very easy Stage one is to support multible user lists Slot exchange between VGrids is another topic which will require more work –We must make sure the design is simple enough to allow for flexibility in the future
