Etymology: From the verb computare “to count, sum up”. The word computer referred to a person’s occupation of counting and calculating in 1646; it then referred to a mechanical calculating machine in 1897. COMPUTER The modern meaning, “programmable digital electronic computer” was used from 1945.

The “dad” of the computer… The first electronic calculator was invented by Konrad Zuse, the so-called “dad” of the computer. He was a young German teacher who, in 1936, built the “Z1”, the first machine to be called a “computer”.

Who was he…? Zuse entered in the Technische Hochschool of Berlin in 1927, where he took courses in civil engineering. From there he began to take interest in building machines, a passion that led him to build the Z1.

Where…? In Germany during 1936, Konrad Zuse undertook the construction of a machine that would be able to perform quick calculations, but endowed with a certain versatility of use. Germany In USA The ENIAC ( Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer ) was the first electronic computer in history. In Great Britain it was invented a computer to deciphering the secret messages of the Germans during WW2. The name of this computer was COLOSSUS.

In the world…in the meantime… When the first mechanical calculators were invented the Second World War had just started (1939). At the same time Adolf Hitler gave a hand to help Francisco Franco slaughter Guernica, in Spain. In Germany the 11th Olympic Games started.

Gilbert coined the term electricity from the Greek word “elecktra”. Pascal invented a machine, the Pascaline that can add, subtract and carry between digits. Gilbert coined the term electricity from the Greek word “elecktra”. 1600 1642 300 B.C. 1623 The first abacus used by Babylonians Wilhelm Schickard invented the first workable mechanical calculator.

Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine The first telegraph was built. 1774 1821 1674 1820 1898 ALCATEL, a company that built software and hardware, was founded. The first commercially successful and useful calculating machine was invented by Thomas de Colmar. Leibnitz’s machine that can add, subtract, multiply and divide automatically

Zuse finished the Z3, a fully operational calculating machine Grace Hopper programmed the MARK II 1941 1945 1936 1943 1946 Konrad Zuse created the Z1, one of the first binary digital computers. Colossus was planned by Touring and some students ENIAC computer was completed.

The EDVAC, the first electronic computer, was invented. Doug Engelbart invented and patented the first mouse. 1952 1963 1948 1957 1972 The United States created the new agency ARPA to keep the USA military technology ahead of its enemies. ARPA was renamed DARPA Magnetic drum memory was created by Booth

The Personal Computer was built. Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates. 1977 1974 1975 1980 Microsoft licensed Unix and started to develop a PC version, XENIX. Apple became Incorporated.

The first mini- notebook was invented. The first Palm Computing was created. 1999 2005 1984 2000 2007 Microsoft Windows 2000 was released on February. Iphone, the most technology machine, was invented. The first notebook was introduced.

Effects now… We can… … collect and store much more data … complete work more quickly and efficiently … create video and montages with a big variety of special effects … pass the time by playing computer games … make calculations and graphics

Computer and The Teens In our lives the computer has meant a big step. So it has improved our lives and now the teenagers spend more time on the computer than when the P.C. hadn’t been invented, unfortunately they don’t socialise so much. In fact they spend most of their free time on the computer, on the phone and watching TV.
